Extremes, really?
I feel like there’s something very wrong when every politician has to end a speech with God bless the USA. I’d rather they wish me a good evening.
Plus believers think the one must find God for salvation. So even if they never talk about religion, they silently believe that God is the only answer and that excludes atheism. So why can’t atheists similarly exclude God?
You can. In court, you don’t have to swear on a Bible. You can affirm, no?
Personally, I think if you were atheist, and were going to lie, it shouldn’t matter to you anyway whether you are asked to swear on a Bible or not.
Afterall, if you don’t believe, then the Bible is fiction to you and, hence, it would mean less to you to swear on it (and lie) than to affirm you will tell the truth with your word (and lie). Afterall, swearing on the Bible and lying has absolutely no “higher-level” consequences beyond the court of humans.
So hence, what I’m surprised is why more atheists don’t swear on the Bible versus just affirming, since they don’t believe it anyway, and rarely do people in court really end up telling 100% of the truth anyway. You might as well go all out and do everything that can possibly go against the grain of religion, since there absolutely aren’t any consequences 🙂
J/K (sort of)

I agree with you about making religion a public spectacle.
Atheists can exclude God or a higher power, BTW.
April 28, 2015 at 5:24 PM #785454FlyerInHiGuestFlu, plenty of people find the environment so oppressive that they have no choice but to fake it. Scaredy mentioned the crypto Jews.

pretty rare i wager to find a dumber ;ess sophisticated religiious person who doesnt find an atheist to not be an affront to all that is decent in this world.
if atheists stay hidden, then religios people can go on thinking aTHEISTS ARE BAD PEOPLE. KINDA LIKE BEING A CLOSETED GAY. IF YOU GET TO KNOW A HOMOSEXUAL YOU WILL PROBABLY BE LESS OPPOSED TO GAY MARRIAGE. IF GAYS ARE ALL CLOSETED, SOCIETY WILL ASSUME THEY ARE A BUNCH OF PERVERTS. ATHEISTS ARE THE gays of this century…

But we live in one of the most liberal states. Seriously, how do you find religion here oppressive to atheists such as yourself? I’m sure if you wanted to scratch off God from every dollar bill, I don’t think people would notice or care here.
We don’t say prayers in school. You’re not forced to go to church. You don’t need to marry in a church. And if you don’t like like what religious people say, you aren’t forced to listen to anything they have to say. In fact religious people are probably a minority anyway. What is wrong with just ignoring people? Yes, you might not like hearing all this religious stuff, but they have every right to practice what they believe as long as it doesn’t encroach on your right and doesn’t compromise someone(s) safety. That’s even the case if these folks want to act all self-righteous and condemn you to hell, or tell you what a horrible person you are. Whatever…..We are seeing the bashlash from these ridiculous religious freedom laws as a means for people to practice discrimination, and this happens as a result of democracy. So our system in a lot of ways is self correcting at both ends of the extreme. I hardly find things “oppressive”, especially in CA.

discrimination against atheists is rampant.

April 28, 2015 at 9:01 PM #785465FlyerInHiGuestAmerica is not liberal when it comes to religion. The environment is oppressive and atheists do remain in the closet. Atheist are discrimited against and oppressed much worse than gays.
How would religious people like to be bombarded with atheist mesages all day, everyday?
I hope we have an atheist president one day before I die.

I guarantee you’ve had one already, probably multiple/most.

Well that’s the answer right there then, isn’t it? Currently seven state constitutions literally ban atheists from office. That makes it hard for me to ignore.

Doesn’t really support the notion that atheists have a lot of integrity.April 28, 2015 at 10:12 PM #785476scaredyclassicParticipant

I hope we have an atheist president one day before I die.
One can honestly say I believe in G-d, just like I believe in any abstract concept that others generally believe in. I believe in the free market means there is this generally accepted societal concept that that exists, but it’s not a real thing, it’s just an agreed upon way of viewing transactions in thecworld.
like G-d. Something we say exists, in that way that means yes but humans made it up and it meaningless without humans to tell the story.
I believe in G-d in that sense and that the jews are his chosen people. I do.

What about the other 43 states? If it was 43 states that ban atheists, then I would agree with you that it’s a widespread problem. If at all, it seems to suggest we’re already making progress that there are only 7 crazy states left. There are probably more states that oppose same sex marriage then there are states that ban atheism. Not that I’m suggesting it’s right to oppose same sex marriage or to ban atheists. But I hardly call this widespread oppression.

You clearly can’t police a household wrto personal preference how whom to have an intimate relationship with, whom to date, can you? I mean, what next? Affirmative action to address inequality that that might exist on the dating seen that a blond woman only wants to date 6′ 10″ blond man?
I’m pretty confident that if you are an atheist and the person you want to date is deeply religious, he/she and his/her family would drive you nuts just as much as you and your family drive him/her nuts, making the relationship a nonstart. But there’s nothing to worry. There are plenty of atheists to date amongst themselves, just as much there are plenty of religious folks that can date amongst themselves…Well, at least if you discount all the ones that register on ChristianMingle.com that aren’t really Christian, but simply want to get laid.
