Ok, I do take propecia for my thinning hair. It works! It would suck to go bald. I believe vanity is a sin that could send me straight to hell… but oh, well…
From what I can see, the only side effect of Propecia that they list is a decrease in sex drive. Maybe that’s a road sign on the road to hell?
http://www.rxlist.com/propecia-side-effects-drug-center.htm%5B/quote%5DDid you read a few paragraphs down on that page. There are a lot more warnings and a notice that this may not be the complete list of side effects.
Even though warnings are not actually side effects( maybe it takes time) , injesting anything that comes with those kinds or warnings isn’t going to happen for the sake of my hair, it’s pretty darn serious in my mind.
Russ: Agree 100% on that one (as a balding guy). Plus, chicks dig the shaved dome. Added bonus: As a football coach on the defensive side the ball, it makes you look slighted demented, which is nice.

But seriously, propecia (brand name) for hair is the same medication for BPH (enlarge prostage), but 1mg generic finasteride for hair vs. 5mg for BPH.
after much research and talking to my physician, it turns out that at least 50% of men suffer from BPH. Most don’t know it and don’t treat it. Not a big deal if they die between 65 and 75 because the symptoms won’t be that bad.
The longer men live, the more the symptoms of BPH will become apparent. It gets progressivly worse. Once the prostate is too large, there are problems (frequent urination, etc..)
By age 80, 75% of men have BPH, I’m thinking 90% by age 90. Few men live to 100 so we don’t know and they probably wear diapers at that time and don’t even treat BPH.
My dad had been taking Proscar (5mg finasteride) for a decade so there is history in my family. At age 83, he’s fine but he needs to go the bathroom more frequently. I think he should have treated the enlarged prostage earlier.
Finasteride 1mg grows back hair and keeps the prostage from enlarging which is good for the long term. The light dose has no side effects on me.
Anyway, if you live long enough, I bet you will be on some kind of prostage therapy. If you’re reaching 50 or older you should discuss with your physician.

Everyone should read those words. Over and over again. And then ask themselves if they really want to be associated with “beliefs”. Evidence be damned. Hold on to those beliefs, keep them safe, and ignore everything that renders those beliefs false. That is the difference between beliefs and science.

.
I think the prior poster was worried about the decreased sex drive.
And that reminded me: that’s why I decided against Propecia when I did my research. As soon as we read that, my wife said that well the decision is made – no Propecia for you. (I agreed – that is a pretty important part of our life!)
Not worth the risk.
Not sure you guys have ever thought of it this way, but what human is a woman’s favorite? They all gather around them like flies.
A baby! And babies are bald!
Would most women rather have a man with a full head of hair? Probably in most cases. But I have to come to realize it is not the major factor for most women. I usually compare it to the way guys view big breasts. Given everything was equal between two women (that never happens btw), most guys would probably pick the one with larger breasts. But it is not the major factor in who they are with – I know it’s not for me.

it would be kind of bold to believe any doctrine which could be verifiably false at a later date. But it would definitely be cooler … vague beliefs are too hedged. Give me a decent prophecy. An end date for the world. A date for the beginning of creation. Something other than a bland fortune teller reading of the tea leaves. Pussy footing from having gotten burnt in the past?

It seems like smaller breasted women with narrower hips would be worse feeders and breeders. But it’s just not the case. We need more milk production and childbirth facts rather than unsupported quasi religious beliefs.
April 28, 2014 at 7:39 AM #773423NotCrankyParticipantThanks for your explanation, B.
I do all my check-ups good reminder though.I am not out there trolling for women since I am married, but it is fun to see these little crushes and flirting at you….that you can get close enough to chat with them and enjoy their company in regular social ways, chat about things. I don’t know if that would happen as much if I were bald or not? I am sure it’s attitude more than anything. I go with the assumption that mostly women are not physically objectifying men as much as men do them….so it’s easy to get close to them if you want to…until they find out you are creepy or broke.

Bingo!
It’s all in how you act and how you treat them. Express genuine interest in them, and don’t start every sentence with “I”.
Making a good first impression comes down to a few simple rules. (1) SMILE (most important), (2) make eye contact, (3) say hi, (4) compliment something about them, preferably something they have specifically chosen (clothes, jewelry, shoes) and not something they were born with. It is amazing how many men can’t do these simple things.
April 28, 2014 at 2:03 PM #773448UCGalParticipantI’ve discussed the hair thing for men with my friends.
Hair is good.
Bald is good.
Some women prefer one over the other – most women are fine with either. Now for the bad parts:
Fake hair (toupe’s) are bad.
Comb overs are beyond bad. (I wanted it in our marital vows that a comb over would be grounds for divorce!)
Hair inplants are bad… you can tell.
Dyed hair is hard to keep up. Especially with the OTC Just for Men or Grecian. Unless the hair is professionally done it’s usually easy enough to spot a dye job. That’s Bad. – real hair color is not uniform – it’s a mix of colors. Dyed hair is all black, or all chestnut brown…. uniform in color. (that’s why women who color their hair pay big bucks to get it done professionally.)
Work with what you have. If you have thinning hair and don’t want to shave to bald – keep it close cropped. Or shave it. The women in your life will prefer that over trying to cling to hair that isn’t there.
April 28, 2014 at 3:49 PM #773453flyerParticipantAgree the “hair or bald thing” is important, but, IMO, looking younger than your age by staying fit, happy and healthy can also be a big + for everyone.

Most importantly, your wife doesn’t want to risk the loss of sex life for your hair. And she’s the only woman who really matters, after all. 😉

I should also point out that she always wondered why I was spending so much time fretting over hair loss. It never mattered to her. She’s with UC Gal on the stay away from toupee/comb over.
The reason why I was concerned was that by 25 my widow’s peak was at least a finger long. Hard to take in the mid-20s. I also felt (in retrospect wrongly) it was affecting my job search after I graduated, so I looked into alternatives. Propecia was new and all over the news so it was definitely something I considered.
By my mid 30s hair loss was no longer a concern and after I started shaving, I was like wtf why did I spend so much worry over nothing? In her infinite wisdom, my wife said nothing – no “well you should have listened to me” left her lips.
