In the same vein of thinking, I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that candy sales in some countries in Europe were down, possibly because the teenagers were using their money to buy airtime for texting(or SMS as they call it there) instead of buying candy…

August 21, 2010 at 10:02 AM #594356UCGalParticipantI’m a holdout against smart phones. I like tech gadgets – but I don’t like the monthly hit on the data plan. I love to surf the net, but don’t have a strong enough desire to do so while not at work or home. (Have internet access in both places.) It’s not worth the monthly charge for the few times a month I might want to use a data plan on a smart phone.
I’m the opposite of Enron-by-the-sea… I would give up cell phone all together before I’d give up cable tv. I don’t see a reason to give up the wii… no monthly budget hit on that. Different preferences, I guess.

August 21, 2010 at 11:33 AM #594406briansd1GuestCell phones are now a necessity of life. That’s how people live. I’ve resisted texting for a long time. But now, everybody texts so I have no choice.
It was interesting to watch Frontline last night.
They interviewed people about the recession.I don’t see people cutting back on the little things (such as hairstyling) that make life bearable. Cell phones are one of those things.
