Correlation does not imply causation. Organized crime happened during prohibition. I’m sure some people back then made the same argument you’re making with regards to human trafficking and prostitution for organized crime and prohibition.
May 2, 2012 at 6:32 PM #742729ArrayaParticipant
Human trafficking is probably a vanishingly small portion of paid sex encounters. Some housecleaners may have been procured under similar circa but we don’t criminalize housecleaning.
Besides the fact that human trafficing is on the rise. Women don’t go into prostitution because they like to have random sex with strangers(though I am sure you could find one). It usually starts with an ACE (adverse childhood experiance) which is followed up by some type economic coercion and ends with PTSD and a disese. It’s the same thing with porn.
May 2, 2012 at 7:39 PM #742731moneymakerParticipant
My biggest concern about prostitution is it encourages kidnapping and trafficking. For every unemployed college grad who turns a few tricks to make the rent while seeking a real job, there are probably dozens if not hundreds of girls forced into prostitution against their will, many while underage. It’s an issue where the idealist in me (adults should be allowed to engage in whatever consensual transactions they like) disagrees with the pragmatist in me. Of course, perhaps decriminalization and regulation would help with trafficking. I’m pretty sure the Bunny Ranch doesn’t employ any underage, under duress women. But minimally I would want any decriminalization to get rid of those damn card flickers who line the Strip in Las Vegas. I hate those people.
If the INS would just do their job I’m sure many of them would disappear, since very few of them I suspect are legal residents of this country.

women don’t like to have abortions, but it seems rather paternalistic to tell them they may not exercise control over their bodies. Probably some pregnancies occur due to childhood issues, but we still allow adult women to determine how they will use their bodies.
Also, many women have sex with men for reasons that may be because of bad childhoods and don’t get paid. would you criminalize that type of sex as well?
May 2, 2012 at 9:15 PM #742734scaredyclassicParticipantactual interviews with actual sex workers might be different than expectations.
May 2, 2012 at 9:16 PM #742735scaredyclassicParticipantand male prostitutes, are they also generally doing it because of adverse childhoods?
May 2, 2012 at 9:28 PM #742737anParticipantIf a woman can abort a pregnancy legally, why can’t they make money for having sex with men? After all, it’s perfectly legal for a woman to leave a bar with a man and have a one night stand. It’s legal for the man to buy her drinks, but it’s not legal for him to leave $100 bill.
May 2, 2012 at 9:38 PM #742739scaredyclassicParticipanti think it has something to do with possessive monogamy. serial monogamy became socially acceptable because it’s not that far off from non-serial possessive monogamy. prostiution calls socil order into question. when sex is separated from “relationships” people feel threatened. somehow i think the world might be a little better with a bit less possessive monogamy. i agree with chester brown.

This is a monumental oversimplification of what goes on. Many go into to it for there children – because they have no skills and a child to support. Overall, its a vicious business that ruins women. Mentally and physically.

You change the environments that cause that kind of condition. Arresting prostitutes is about as rational and humane as arresting drug users.

Rule #5: Always teach your daughter how to turn her own wrench and drive manual transmission car. That would put most lazy men in their place.
I specifically looked for this and now believe it to be a myth much like purple unicorns.

May 3, 2012 at 6:51 AM #742750NavydocParticipantI remember once reading a statistic in medical school which stated that the top 10% most sexually active males have sex with 50-60% of the females in any population. This carries throughout the animal kingdom. Helps explain the spread of STD’s, and the fact that the AVERAGE male has fewer lifetime partners than many people think. As the father of a 4-year old daughter, this horrifies me, and it is an almost daily thought in my mind how to teach my daughter to avaoid these guys. Any tips would be helpful. I figure I’ve got maybe 10 more years before she’e really in danger.
NeetaT, I don’t know if you’re one of the 10% or simply want to be, but you’re certainly not endearing yourself to any fathers (or mothers) of girls on this forum.
May 3, 2012 at 6:56 AM #742753scaredyclassicParticipantmany business enterprises ruin people physically and mentally and we allow them to continue.
many people work only to support children–why would we deny prostitutes the right to pursue their chosen trade? Is it irrational to work for 180 an hour versus 8 an hour and take on more risk and more emotional drain, esp. when you ahve no other skill or trade, and a family to support?
and there are many prostitutes who are not “ruined” mentally or physically, just as the majority of drug users are not ruined mentally or physically.
I guess i’d need more data on the “ruination of male and female prostitutes.
eliot spitzer’s prostitute seemed to be doing better than most of us.
