Because we are still clinging to the notion that some activities can be stopped by making laws against them.
I’m someone who understands that nuance can make a huge difference.

1. Make daughter independently wealthy so she doesn’t need to depend on a stupid guy..
2. Train daughter with lots of guns, knives, martial arts…so that if she runs into someone like NeetaT, she can slice off his penis…literally.
FLU – I didn’t know your daughter was from South America.
Hey, if you had a daughter, it wouldn’t matter where she’s from it’s the principle of it.
I once had this taiwanese friend. We were just friends.. I was really good friends with her dad…
Her dad had an arsenal of weapons…We use to go shooting together, him, me , and daughter. I was shooting a .22… Daughter was shooting a 357….I think we were 14-15 then….
I asked her dad why he wanted her to teach her guns, martial arts, etc… He said, “so she can kick people’s asses, so I don’t have to..I have 3..You’ll understand if you ever have 1″… Guess he was right…
May 2, 2012 at 9:48 AM #742656AnonymousGuestLike any dad, I am going to do my best to teach my daughter how to protect herself.
But, I’ve always been skeptical of the tough-guy dad persona as an influence on a young man’s intentions.
Perhaps the “dad with a shotgun” may give pause, but the power of testosterone – which makes young men irrationally brave (i.e. stupid) – is a tough thing to overcome.
May 2, 2012 at 10:25 AM #742662poorgradstudentParticipantMy biggest concern about prostitution is it encourages kidnapping and trafficking. For every unemployed college grad who turns a few tricks to make the rent while seeking a real job, there are probably dozens if not hundreds of girls forced into prostitution against their will, many while underage. It’s an issue where the idealist in me (adults should be allowed to engage in whatever consensual transactions they like) disagrees with the pragmatist in me. Of course, perhaps decriminalization and regulation would help with trafficking. I’m pretty sure the Bunny Ranch doesn’t employ any underage, under duress women. But minimally I would want any decriminalization to get rid of those damn card flickers who line the Strip in Las Vegas. I hate those people.

Yes, I’m pretty sure too…I mean I’m guessing as I’ve never been to such a place…

But they are just advertising “private dancers,” right?
I agree though that the issue is not prostitution per se, but the fact that it tends to go hand-in-hand with “real,” more serious crimes. Even where prostitution is legal, like Amsterdam, there are big problems with kidnapping and trafficking – mostly girls from Eastern Europe and Russia.
There’s some pretty horrific stuff that goes on:

My daughter will be brought up with the knowledge to spot your type a mile away, and the confidence to laugh you off if you do get too close. May you contract the diseases you deserve.

Rule #1: Stupid men like to impress women with money.
If the woman is financially is independent, stupid men suddenly has no game.Rule #2: Daughters always rebel if the dad is a complete nutjob. Daughter needs to discover herself that most men are pigs.
Rule #3: Daughters get all weird if there is a loss of a father figure while growing up. It has to do a lot with self-esteem. Don’t bail out on your daughter
Rule #4: Do stuff to build up your daughter’s self esteem. Sports, clubs, etc. If you don’t, some pig out there will doing a good job trying to tear it down.
Rule #5: Always teach your daughter how to turn her own wrench and drive manual transmission car. That would put most lazy men in their place.

Sounds to me like you are talking crazy libertarian talk.
May 2, 2012 at 1:09 PM #742683briansd1GuestProstitution is the world’s oldest profession. The secret agents who indulged are proof of it.
Sex has been used as a means to an end forever. Sex is a powerful incentive. You can use it to obtain power, money, secrets, etc…
Did you hear of poor little rich girl?
History shows that independently wealthy women are not happy. Many of them died looking for happiness.

I don’t usually associate the word ‘nuance’ with libertarians, but who knows?
As far as this subject goes, I think the nuance is explained pretty well in this thread. At face value, prostitution is an independent transaction between consenting adults – we should all have the ‘freedom’ to participate, right?
But then there’s all the bad stuff that always comes with it, like slavery.
Giving everybody freedom doesn’t always make everybody free.

Excellent post, flu.
One thing about “independently wealthy” women is that they tend to want someone who is at least as wealthy as they are. Not sure that wealth would dissuade her from trying to date/marry a wealthy guy, but at least she would not NEED to stay with him if he turned out to be a jerk.
Regarding #3, it’s funny how people make such a big deal out of boys needing their fathers. I think that daughters need their fathers even more than sons do. You are so right about fathers not bailing out on daughters.
May 2, 2012 at 5:37 PM #742726scaredyclassicParticipantWouldn’t the churchgoers say it’s wrong to have any nonmarital sex. Prostitution would be no worse for them, right?
