It’s different for me Gandalf. I am entitled to lecture because I am actually somewhat sincerely participating with you all,for better or for worse.I think you are too.
Not requesting that anyone really be overly polite or accommodating if they are actually engaged.
I think the most to hope from these off topic posts is a little entertainment and perhaps some intellectual enrichment or even personal growth, for those so inclined.
One can teach and influence a very few adults, a very small percentage of the time and although, I blow it all the time, patience and restraint with a modicum of good humour, if not politeness are usually in the mix when it is successful. So is a willing student(and he is not down in that ditch).
I think ZK just set a good example.Although John could probably care less, ZK’s demeanor made his message not go unheard by some of the rest of us. I know Allan is a conservative Republican and I am not, so it had ecumenical value.

Situation in Georgia is bad news, pipelines to Europe. Things get interesting from here.

I think Shadowfax did more than an adequate job explaining the duties of the President of the Harvard Law Review or what Obama’s status was as a Con Law instructor at UoC, but of course, his argument wasn’t addressed.
Frankly, I’ll treat certain posters here with respect (Allan being one of them) even if I disagree with some aspects of their politics, but the courtesy shouldn’t (nor will) be extended to the OP nor Casca.
PS Back in my managing editor days at a law journal at Duke, I frankly didn’t have time to fine-tune my own note for publication. I was too busy making sure that my staff and the authors were on the same page and that the articles were adequately proofed before I had to deal with the publishing house. My grades dropped my 3rd year while dealing with all that crap. Obama managed to pull a magna cum laude at Harvard. If he’s dumber than a box of rocks, I’m afraid to know how we’d classify a number of the posters here.

August 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM #256115Allan from FallbrookParticipantDuke: Thanks. I think the point I always try to make is this: You can debate a point vigorously, while still remaining professional and courteous. I would rather argue with someone that holds beliefs that are the polar opposite of mine, because it forces me to marshal my resources, engage my brain and MAKE MY POINT.
Those that resort to ad hominem or simply shilling an intellectually bankrupt position (whether coming from the right or left), dumb the discourse down and turn away those that would find the discussion and debate engaging and would otherwise participate.
No one likes being told they are an idiot, especially by someone who comes across as overbearing, snide and self-righteous.
Keep it clean, keep it fair and keep it interesting.
