I thought I share a somewhat funny thing that happened to me over the weekend… (though I’m not laughing (yet))..
So it goes like this…. My 5 year old was playing with the iPad..After she was done with the usual math/reading games, she wanted to download a free game.
The game is basically a virtual game which allows the player to build a bakery, which allows one to create pastries, cakes,etc and then sell them to customers…. Each time you sell, you make virtual dollars, and making the pastries cost virtual dollars…Adding more tables in the virtual bakery to serve more customers costs virtual dollars….So she goes on adding more tables to get more customers, and then runs out virtual dollars….So a dialog pop’s open that says “to get more virtual dollars”, get more “gems”….
Little FLU: “daddy, how do I get some gems”?
FLU: “just click around (not really paying attention”
Little FLU: “(click click click)…Ok, done…Thanks…”
FLU: “Great… Oh I see, you got 586 more gems, how did you do this”?
Little FLU: “I just went up here, clicked this button, and clicked ok after that”…
FLU: (doing the same thing)…”Wow, dear, that’s interesting… I’m confused that you use $99.85 virtual dollars to purchase 586 gems, but then you use the gems to convert them back to virtual dollars…I wonder why that’s the case….Wait……”
…..And this is when FLU realizes that Little FLU purchased $99.85 worth of virtual GEMS from the the app store.. So, now FLU gets to call up Citibank to see if I can get the charges reversed….Lol…
Lesson learned, don’t have auto-login enabled on the app store and/or remove the CC information….
It’s hard to make any money on appstore after the initial week if you don’t hit the top 25 category.
In-app purchases and incentivised downloads through TapJoy or some other similar service are more reliable revenue streams.
