People aren’t buying cars here in San Diego because they are too busy buying $600K houses in Carmel Valley. Once they get moved in I’m sure they’ll all get back to buying new BMWs and Lexii.

Year over year US sales comparisons:
-46% Chrysler
-41% Honda
-40% Toyota
-33% Nissan
-29% General Motors
-27% BMW
-24% Fordhttp://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/02/by-the-numbers-may-2009-gm-and-ford-surprise-edition/
Did any of you walk away from the recent news reports knowing that Honda, Toyota and Nissan sales were down more than GM?

Yeah but GM sales were down last year too when the Japanese brands were not. Remember $4 gas? Everyone was out looking for a Prius last year. Now everybody’s out looking for a bus pass.GM’s issue is not so much that they have had a couple bad years. They’ve had fifteen in a row and burn cash by the bale. They’ve only recently been burning your cash. That’s what put them in the news. I’ve owned 12 GM cars in a row and love them. Even I think it’s long past time for the General to die. Good cars and trucks, really bad business.
Sadly I think there’s room for only one American car maker. Americans simply don’t respect their own economy.

June 2, 2009 at 7:27 PM #409956Omega PointParticipantMy guess is that foreign automakers aren’t offering as large as incentives. Plus, the sheeple circle like vultures when they hear and see the word “bankruptcy” thinking there are great deals to be had regardless if they really need or can afford a new car.
In addition, didn’t GMAC loosen their credit standards recently? Don’t know if the foreign auto makers did the same.
Now that we have Gov’t Motors I’m sure there will soon be tax breaks in perpetuity for buying their cars. The taxpayer investment will hardly stop even at $100 billion. But hey at least we’ll have small cars that get 40 mpg but gets crushed like an aluminum can in a wreck. And, we can all smile because we are “saving” the planet. Seems like a good tradeoff.
Good luck Gov’t Motors and Chrysler, I will never buy one of your cars again.
