That is horrible what happenned to those tenants. I cannot even imagine that.
Back in the day, Vegas was great….loved to stay downtown–before they put up that mall thing playing country music and a flashing light show. You could play craps for $2 and if times were tough, there was always the $1 black jack tables at Union Square. Not to mention penny slots, for REALLY a penny! Went to a casino in Palm Desert last weekend, could hardly figure out what was what on those penny slots…which added up to about 50 cents a pull/button push. At least your hands don’t get dirty anymore.
Binions had not gone bust in those days, and you could get free pics taken in front of the million dollar horseshoe….the days before digital…had to come back the next day to get the photos.
Not sure what it takes to get comps these days….but back in late 80’s/early 90’s comps at the Fremont were flowing freely.
Aaaah, I miss the old Vegas (or miss my youth maybe!).

[/quote]I read that article about the new law, the idea is a good one, not sure I agree with how the law is written and I’m sure it will be exploited, I see some serious loopholes. But that aside, the one thing that jumped out at me was the entitlement of the person they chose to use an example. Here is what they said when they found out their rental was being foreclosed on(taken from the article):
“I had a week to be out,” said Brantley, who depends on government aid to help pay the rent. “I don’t want to move to a bad neighborhood.”
This bothered me, was the author of the piece trying to bother me, or is this as clean of a victim as they could find. If people on government rent assistance (translation:welfare) wont live in bad neighborhoods, then who does live there? Just lie to me, everytime I look at the taxes I pay, I am at risk for feeling bad, but I like to feel good, I want to feel that my money is helping people, show me some blind old woman that doesn’t have to eat dog food because my tax money is helping her, why can’t they find her. I really don’t want to hear that my tax money is going to make sure the poor don’t have to suffer the indignity of living in a poor area, that welfare recipients are now discriminating.

May 29, 2009 at 8:22 AM #407105CDMA ENGParticipantCan’t believe you liked downtown…
The cops were on standing orders to pickup anyone white two blocks North from the Fremont Strip. You were A. Lost Tourist or B. Looking to score. That was a bad area back then… Still is… Just that the cops will “do a little tap dance on your head” if you come south out of those neighborhoods.
Believe me… There is nothing in the movie Casino that is exegarated.
But as for the Comps. It is one of the things my dad used to do. Before it was based on knowing the guy/gal having a good relation with them… Knowing how much the guy may or may not drop on a table and how good he was to your staff. And the computation was all done in his head and on a hand shake.
Now… They literal do a cost analysis on what you have lost and what you deserve for losing that much… Unless you are the type of guy that may or may not lose millions in a joint a year. Those guy are the only ppl now that are catered to. Joe Nobody gets a Meal Comp if that.
I think there was a guy portrayed at the begining of Casino (may have been another Movie) who was killed. Japenese Yakuza. My dad knew this guy and would tell me stories about how he was a king in this town. This guy was known to drop millions in days playing Bacarat. He once played almost 3 days. When that guy came to town everything was a Comp. No questioned asked. And anything… Girls, Drugs… Whatever… The casino had ppl that had “hookups” legal or whatever…
Shit. When I grew up there they had two dollars buffets that were excellent! Now? Everybody has there hand out… Sad what that town has become.
