I know this is off-topic, but I also know some attorneys read this board, so if anyone can give me any help I would greatly appreciate it.
I made a huge mistake (I am kicking myself for it now) and I loaned a long term friend $3000. She lives in New Jersey and stated she needed the money for a holdover between jobs, because there were some error with her paychecks. She was supposed to pay me back on 31 May. Supposedly, the first check was returned via online banking because she sent it to the wrong address. Then, she stated she sent another one from a different account, but I did not receive it. She claims her account was debited and she would have to correct it.
Per email:
She reports she is India (with new job) and has 5 minutes of internet time a day and that she will get this worked out. I have sent her to do this via paypal, no response. She reports she will pay any interest fees on this money and not to worry.
I have tried to call her, but all her phone numbers are not accurate. Over the years, she has changed phone numbers a lot. I called her parents and left a message that I was trying to contact her, they did not call back.
At this time, I think she is avoiding me because she does not have the money.
I do have her snail mail address. I don’t know what to do. Review of small claims information looks like I would have to take her to small claims in New Jersey—could a paralegal represent me? Or can I do this in San Diego? I have all the emails stating she would pay, so I am guessing a judge would rule in my favor. But, then how do I get the money from her? Wage garnishment?

I like the idea of giving back a sob story. Tell her you have cancer and need the money for chemo. (no offense to the real cancer sufferers out there). Or tell her you missed a mortgage payment and are getting foreclosed on.
