TG, I’ll settle this once and for all. Just get this.
IT’s > 335 > G37 > 328
Haha, I’ll concur with that ranking and I’d take that M5 too. Just DOOOOO IIIIIIIIIT :-D. I might pull the trigger on that one in 3-4 years as a CPO. 2008 M5 CPO are around $40k today, so that’s what I’m expecting this 2011 M5 will be at in 4 years.January 18, 2012 at 10:53 PM #736335temeculaguyParticipantThanks AN, I’ve owned infiniti’s, I like them a lot. There’s one in my driveway that my kid drives and I’ve had a G in the past as my daily. I’m not freaked out about repairs, it’s just that my latest love (mecedes cls or 6 series) have prohibitive repair costs. Most repairs, like a transmission or breaks or struts are about three times that of their entry level models or the two cars we’ve been discussing.

notice the cost of each thing is double, 2300 for brakes or 1k for an alternator on a cls is a little worrisome.
dont hate on the 328, right now 2011’s are about 27k with 5 years of cpo (3 reamining +2) and a 2008 is 23k, with two years. There is value there, there is better handling and hp than 90% of the offerings on the road at a fairly reasonable price. I’ll go drive my final 3 or 4, look at the price, weigh my options and just pick one, like you said, you cant go wrong.
I literally drive the most boring car in the world 5 days a week, any of these are going to be “fun” for me. But my count is 3 votes for the 335, so I guess that’s where I’ll start.

Was just kidding bout the driver comment
Yep, which is why if I have to pick between 335, G37, 328, I’d pick 335 > G37 > 328, due to their performance and fun factor. On a side note, who here have taken their car(s) to the track (either autoX or real race track) and see what your car can really do while pushing it 9/10-10/10 of it’s capability. I used to and loved it. Will do it again when the kids are older.
I used to autoX a lot and I see those BMW and Porsche club all the time at the Q. However, having my first taste at a real track, I’ll never do autoX again. When the kids are grown, I’ll convert my G35 into a track car and get a CPO M5 as my daily driver. You get so much more bang for your bucks at a real race track. But you do go through tires and brakes very quickly. Reduce some weight, toss this on: http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/TTINFO/ttindex.htm, upgrade the suspensions and my G35 should be able to embarrass my future M5 :-D. My brother is a big track geek as well with a 400WHP Evo. I’m hoping to learn a thing or two from him and go with him to the many track days.January 18, 2012 at 11:14 PM #736339anParticipantTG, I know what you mean about Mercedes’ repair bill. My wife had a C240 once upon a time and when she brought it in for an oil change, they say it’s due for some basic service where they mainly just check stuff, change the oil and air filter, and they want $900 for it. I bought better brake pads for that car and found out Mercedes doesn’t install parts, you’d have to buy it from them. I think they wanted around $1k for that too. I end up getting a shop installed the better than OEM pad for much cheaper.
That’s one thing that I like about Infiniti. You can buy your own parts and have them install it. I trust them more than just some no name shop on major repair. But you can save a lot of money by buying the parts online and skip those “services”. I usually just ask them what are the major things that need to be replaced for that particular service. I then go buy the parts online and have them install it. They end up inspecting the car anyways and I save a bundle.
January 18, 2012 at 11:41 PM #736342paramountParticipantFWIW, I drive every other day in a G, and it was on my short list as was the 300 SRT8. I think the point AN misses is that yes a G37 might perform better, but performance numbers don’t tell the whole story.
It’s the total package IMO that must be considered.
The BMW 3.0 engine is the best non exotic 6 in the world, period. The handling and feel of a BMW is unmatched by Infiniti or Lexus.
I really like the G37 Limited Edition Sedan, but I think that is 50k plus.
When I was considering the G and the SRT8, I just kept thinking why not just own the best? BMW Baby!
It is likely that a 328 will have less maintenance issues than a 335, and the one I got is pretty basic – the only option was the sport transmission.
Most importantly, I hope to pass on the 328 to my son one day, and I thought the 335 would be a little much for an inexperienced driver.
For the last 4 years I’ve been driving a beat up old Saturn (no heat or AC), so a 328 is big step up.
I’m actually considering a X5 for my wife in a year or two, I guess I am a BMW fanboi.

GET THE PORSCHE. GET THE PORSCHE. GET THE PORSCHE…
Come on TG, we live in San Diego. You see bimmers as often as Toyota Camry’s and Honda Accords, mainly because most of them are either leased or financed…
And let’s face if if you want to get a 6 series, the latest ones look a hell of lot nicer then the previous generation, so you might as well wait for the latest ones as CPO…
or if you prefer 4 door

There is one more issue only for me, being in temecula, if I end up with a cpo or one still under warranty, the infiniti dealer is 30 miles away, there is a bmw dealer in town. That’s only a factor for me, but it is a factor.
TG: I bought my 328 at BMW of Murrieta, and in all honesty/objectivity I would not buy from them again.
Based on some personal knowledge I would look at BMW of Escondido; but then just have warranty repairs done at BMW Murrieta.
January 19, 2012 at 12:03 AM #736346anParticipantI didn’t miss that point. I hear that point all the time. I wanted to believe in that point. I test drove the 330 back then before I got my G35. I wanted to get the 330, but I just can’t overcome the value factor. This C&D review reaffirms it. A $36k 328i without leather and power/heated seat or a similarly priced G37 have leather, powered/heated seat, navigation, backup camera, etc. The list is long. I test drove the 335 and 328 a year or two back and I like the 335 but can’t pull myself to like the price. The 328 is feel so weak, even coming from my G35. I didn’t feel anything special WRT to the handling. The manual gear box is better though, so is the clutch.
BTW, Limited Edition G37 is $41k, 10% less than a fully loaded 328i.
For you to consider the SRT8 does give me a glimpse into what kind of a driver you are and how hard you’d push your car in the turns. Maybe my previous cars have full coilovers and I was spoiled by having a real race suspension. These stock suspension really come down to preferences but they both will be equivalent once you toss on a nice KW3 coilovers.
I too test drove the X5 before buying a MDX. Again, it came down to price. Didn’t feel much of a difference in term of handling or ride. While the SH-AWD from Acura put the AWD in the X5 to shame in snow and incline.
FYI, BMW 3.0 I6 is NOT the best 6 cylinder in the world. That title is reserve for the RB26DETT in the Skyline or the Supra 2JZ-GTE. Those two engines will wipe the floor on BMW’s I6, it’s not even a close competition.
BTW, rumor is BMW is dropping the I6 in favor of a V6. So, there goes the inherent buttery smooth I6. FYI, I6 are smooth because of the inherent balance nature of a I6, not because of some BMW magic.

I totally agree with flu. GET THE PORSCHE 😀I also agree with him that the new 6 series looks way better than the current one.
I’m not sure which Porsche you were looking at, but the new Boxster looks way better than the current one.
January 19, 2012 at 8:38 AM #736369sdrealtorParticipantThe BMW service experience is incredible. They treat me amazingly every time I walk in the door and a loaner is never an issue even if just for a few hours. I bring it in for an oil change and they say the brakes were looking a bit thin so we changed them too. They even have a Starbucks machine I can stop in to use anytime I want. If you are worried about repairs you can buy the extended service package for a few thousand dollars and then you dont have to worry about anything. You cna buy these packages from your bank and I think Costco sells them also for far less than the dealer.
January 19, 2012 at 9:10 AM #736375scaredyclassicParticipantAh well. Kia honored their 10 y warranty on my Sedona problem after hemming and hawing a bit so I guess I won’t get a BMW.
January 19, 2012 at 9:38 AM #736385sdrealtorParticipantI was never a car guy before and always drove cars into the ground. I still have my 10 year old GMC that I drive daily. After getting the VIP treatment from BMW I have to admit that not only do I love driving the car but I love walking in there and being pampered. Its so unlike me and I still wear my shoes until the soles fall off.
