Has anybody used an iPhone outside of the country for GPS? I’d like to use this function, but I don’t want to connect to a data network and rack up huge charges.
I’ve cached the Google Earth maps for where I’m going, but now I’ve read that the GPS on the iPhone requires an assist from the cellular network to get it’s initial location, then it can use a minimum of satellites to further pinpoint the location.
If I have it in airplane mode and I turn on location services, supposedly, it’ll take 15 minutes to find my location and will have timed out by then. If I take it out of airplane mode, It’ll connect to the cell network (free unless I take or make calls I assume), but wont’t it also turn on the Edge network and start leaking data? There is no 3G where I’m going.

Mapping uses triangulation based on cell towers. You can buy a local SIM card and pop it into your iPhone (cheaper than using hotel phone). Just make sure that that the iPhone is unlocked and jailbroken.

it will not fetch data via roaming unless you turn that feature on (it is OFF by default)…if it tries to fetch data you will just get a message saying that you need to turn roaming on to proceed.
