Oh wow. That’s me. I’m am so zen now. My diet is dialed in and my desires for consumption are very limited although I still want a retirement condo in a foreign country so I can go as I please.
But “chill the fuck out” does not mean being passive. You can still be ambitious and achieve things. Live a zen life with grace and aplomb.
Bill Gates used to be a hard driving young man. He’s pretty zen now.

February 23, 2018 at 9:48 PM #809400EscoguyParticipantI run a small multinational manufacturing company kind of as a hobby.
Don’t really need the money but it is gratifying to keep 30+ people employed, manufacture in California and export to the rest of the world a high quality product.
I can walk away anytime as it’s not “mine” and my livelihood doesn’t “depend on it”.
Still will try to travel more in coming years. Focus on being a good dad etc.

[/quote]I so agree with Pinker. Humanity is indeed improving. It helps to be a world citizen and look at the big picture. But if one is in a community devastated by opioids, one may feel stagnant or depressed.
Also, many folks are jealous of others’ successes. For example, they may feel that dreamers succeeding is them failing. They don’t understand the concept of win-win.

“The nice part about being a pessimist is that you are constantly being either proven right or pleasantly surprised.” Unknown – but it sounds like Mark Twain

I wouldn’t have believed this years ago, but I believe mood has a lot to do with minerals. Calcium and magnesium are both important in calming neurons back to an “at rest” state. As we get older, our ability to absorb minerals decreases. Wouldn’t it be a kicker if all this moodiness was as simple as a daily fluctuations in mineral intake?

yup its true,… if you set your “goals” low enough it is possible to exceed them
since you mentioned “being a pessimist” FWIW IMHO that “mindset” is self-defeating,… BUT having a sense of situation awareness along w/ a sense of humor unto itself does not guarantee success; however, it does improve the odds of “success”
not too long ago a friend from my “flying circus” days (basically a guy who flew for the USAF and now make a living being a 777 driver) sent me an article that seems applicable to the topic of mental outlook and outcome,…

Why Fighter Pilots know that Quick Reactions are for Losers…I know to ‘respond’ and not to ‘react’.
Years of instructing in flying training and exposure to situations that require critical thinking in demanding environments, have taught me that to ‘react’, is to die.
I’ve seen it countless times in young, inexperienced aviators and normally it’s because they haven’t had a plan for the event they’ve encountered…

February 24, 2018 at 4:12 PM #809416flyerParticipantA sense of loving life is different for everyone. We’re just glad we’ve found what works for us, and hope others do the same.
February 25, 2018 at 8:11 AM #809421scaredyclassicParticipantwe are all periodically flooded with anxiety and a sense that we are wasting our lives. when I think if being chill, i think if those jolts being short-lived and less alarming.
February 26, 2018 at 10:31 AM #809424sdsurferParticipantTo be present to those around me whether it be my kids, my wife, my neighbor or just sitting there by myself. It’s a work in progress for sure that I’m always honing.
