December 3, 2011 at 12:42 AM #733933sdduuuudeParticipantIf you can’t grunt in a gym, where the hell can you grunt?
Totally OK to grunt in a gym !
December 3, 2011 at 8:04 AM #733935HobieParticipantGrunt, pick, scratch, —- it’s what we do! 🙂
December 3, 2011 at 8:17 AM #733936scaredyclassicParticipantit’s pretty loud, but only on the upward movement of a deep squat.
kinda like HNNmmmFFF!!!!!! but louder.
December 3, 2011 at 10:11 AM #733937NotCrankyParticipantSeems like their is a shortage of grunting in the lives of many. Sounds like a personal problem.
Besides that, if you don’t grunt when lifting massive weights you could get hemorrhoids. Why not just explain that?
December 3, 2011 at 12:22 PM #733941svelteParticipantI can tell you that our gym, those who grunt are laughed at, even by the trainers.
I’m not talking about the ocassional grunt that can be heard 5-10 feet max. That’s okay.
I’m talking about the deep bellowing grunts with each lift that can be heard loudly at 50 ft.
As for acceptability, it’s a sliding scale between those two…
December 3, 2011 at 12:41 PM #733942scaredyclassicParticipantIf you are actually working to lift at your limit, is it natural to grunt?
The majority I see at the gym appears to be dicking around. 85 percent body swinging bicep curls 15 perc misc. Other lifts. Very few seem to be putting it all out there. When they’re done they look like they went for a stroll in the park. The people with trainers are just chatting away while doing easy little reps. I swear I want to tell them to chat elsewhere. My grunting is less distracting than the endless blather about nonlifting topics between trainers am “trainees”.
Very very few seems to be working their ass off.
And they laugh at the occasional grunt.
December 3, 2011 at 1:39 PM #733945NavydocParticipantI don’t think I can do a squat without grunting. I usually use about 150% of my body weight. Don’t worry, you’ll get there sooner than you think.
The way I solved the embarrassment problem was to build a gym in my house. I can yell my head off there.
December 3, 2011 at 11:01 PM #733965scaredyclassicParticipantI wanted some antigrunting proponents but maybe I cut it off w my ossenive progrunt stance
December 3, 2011 at 11:26 PM #733966svelteParticipantA little grunting is fine by me, as long as it is masked by the gym music pretty much. A lot of grunting is distracting to my workout. I’m pretty sure the ettiquite messages that scroll on the monitors discourage excessive grunting…and social talking.
December 4, 2011 at 7:26 AM #733968scaredyclassicParticipantGoddamn monitors.
December 4, 2011 at 9:54 AM #733979scaredyclassicParticipantIf you do five sets if 5 that’s 25 grunts. If there are 25 people in the gym that’s 525 grunts. I figure 1 grunt every 6 seconds.
Attractive women are probably more distracting.I’d like to see an all men all barbell gym open up in temecula, something really retro and severe.
I was thinking maybe it could be cool to open one up calked the yard, and just have a bunch of weight outdoors. And not allow any women.
December 4, 2011 at 10:15 AM #733983scaredyclassicParticipantI went to golds gum on a guest pass and hated it. The monitors bugged the crap out of me. They didn’t gave a true power cage justva “maxx rack with weird pistons. Csomeonr was constant ly walking around cleaning up. Tv monitors were going incessantly. The locker room was too foofoo. Everything about it felt lightweight and icky and weak.
December 4, 2011 at 10:18 AM #733984scaredyclassicParticipantI am just going to buy some equipment and set up for squats in the yard here.
I want to grunt freely and frankly quite a bit louder. I’ve been restraining myself.
Might go pick up 400 lbs of rusty weights from perris later.
