Have to concur with going Magellan. We have the Magellan Roadmate 1470 and love it. Two other people have bought identical units after riding with me – it is addicting!
As for the getting stuck in another state, I’ve never had a problem but my wife had that when we were in Vegas – it kept thinking we were at the Oakland Airport. Then she figured out she was going through the menus wrong…I think she kept selecting “resume last trip”….and coincidently we had just flown from Oakland to Vegas. lol.

I’d save yourself some money because there is quickly becoming a convergence in handheld GPS for driving and cell phones….The cellphones are getting much more powerful and pretty soon there won’t be a need for a GPS only device. That’s why those GPS companies all the sudden are trying to get into the cell phone business….Because they know their days are numbered.
FWIW, phones pretty speedy that can do this reasonably well.
1)HTC Incredible (Verizon)
2)HTC EVO 4G (Sprint)
3)HTC/Google Nexus One (aka Passion)
4)Samsung Galaxy series…
5)I use to recommend the Motorola Droid. But it’s outdated already and most likely won’t be able to run the next next generation o/s (gingerbread)…Disclaimer: I’m biased, because my touches a lot of these google phones.

I use the iPhone with Navigon GPS. You don’t need a data plan to use it. It’s about 1.4GB to load onto your iPhone.
Slow on 3G but fine on 3GS and iPhone 4.
