OT: Gated communities and landlines

Yesterday’s power outage got me thinking about gated communities and landlines. At gated communities where you punch a code into the keypad that corresponds to the homeowner’s house, it rings the homeowner’s landline.

What if someone didn’t want a landline? Can the gates be programmed to call a cellphone or all the gate systems hardwired to each house, necessitating a landline?

With landline use on a steep decline, if someone were buying into a gated community and didn’t want a landline, this could end up being an additional monthly expense.

I don’t think gate codes anywhere are a closely guarded secret and I doubt anyone would purchase a landline just to keep them that way- jmho.

Gates can be programmed to call cell phones. Not a problem.

You might have issues if your cell is a toll call from the gates location.

Having the gate call your cell isn’t that great if you don’t live alone….
