I should add that, IMHO, those who bought big gas guzzler deserve to spend their money on gas. With the extra money they spend on gas, and purchasing their vehicles, they could take a nice vacation every year (or add to savings every year).
If they didn’t care about gas prices, they wouldn’t be lining up at Costco.
I don’t believe that anybody needs a big SUV (unless they live on a farm and need to pull a horse trailer, etc..) You can fit parents and two kids in a Honda Civic just fine. People do that everywhere else in the world.
Americans are just fat and indulgent. They have giant strollers, huge drink bottles and junk that they “need” to carry everywhere they go.
Fortunately, though, this is a free country, and no one necessarily dictates what someone can/can’t drive. I’ll stick to the twin turbo v6 and v8’s, thank you very much…

Costco strategically sell certain premium items at low prices to “surprise and delight” their customers. It’s a branding thing. Shoppers therefore believe that everything that Costco sells is better quality and cheaper.
Most people can’t determine quality and value, independent of branding.
Branding also has to do with social standing. Many will shop at Costco for the cheap prices, but they won’t shop at Walmart because it’s “ghetto”.
Arco has a “ghetto” image. The off brand independent gas stations suffer the same problem. They tend to be run-down and not where you want to be seen. People don’t want to drive their nice cars there. But Costco is OK.
Agree with this. I guess I’m ghetto.

March 21, 2011 at 12:59 PM #679083LAAFTERHOURSParticipant
for those worried about saving pennies on gas…
On days I know I’ll need to buy gas – I check it ahead of time and look for the best deal in my normal path for the day.
I don’t drive out of my way to buy gas… that’s stupid. But if I’m at Costco – I’ll get gas there.
I also time my costco runs, in general, to avoid crowds. Not on weekends, not at lunchtime, etc.
This.(thumbs up) I wouldnt go near costco unless its at 9am on a weekend. Fillup gas, have a list prepared and go down the back aisles to bypass all the grannys and newbs window shopping everything in the store.
