ParticipantIf you have a chance, I recommend reading the various writings of Aaron Cometbus (google him).
He was for many years an enthusiast and chronicler of the sustainable punk life and has eaten hundreds of meals from dumpstered veggies. He also managed to turn me off on it forever.
And I eat some weird shit.

ParticipantI would venture to say that I am probably one of the only people you know with an actual informed opinion on pairing fried crickets with Sake and weed.

ParticipantIn college I had friends who lived near the vons (then safeway) and bigbear grocery stores on Adams Ave in (ab)Normal Heights.
They’d regularly dumpster dive the dumpsters near the loading docks. They’d make up big stews, soups, etc with the produce that was being tossed. They’d invite all their friends to dinner.
I didn’t do the actual diving, but I ate a lot of the food.
I’ve definitely trash picked. Furniture, etc… I’ve got a chair that I found in an alley in college… it’s a great chair. I’ve also got a pink mixmaster mixer – still works. Used it to make cookies last week.
Hey – reduce, reuse, recycle.

ParticipantWe ventured out Christmas night to tour temeculas dumpsters. Probably the most fun family trip we’ve ever made.

ParticipantI don’t know if I should be embarrassed to say this…but what the hell.
I have no experience dumpster diving. I do, however, have a son who is apparently very experienced. He lives in a norcal old hippie town. Someone else mentioned the (urbanrealtor I think?) punk culture influence, and that’s probably where he got it. He knows what days of the week to go to what stores, bakeries, restaurants, distributors. He doesn’t get all his food this way, but a lot of it, shares it with his household, the household next door, etc.
I was visiting a couple years ago when one of his roommates came home with the weekly take from the commercial bakery. Expected a couple dozen loaves of 3 or 4 day old bread. Instead got a bag full of dope. Had to be 3 or 4 lbs. Not good shit mind you. Stems and leaves, no buds. Maybe remnants. But still.
Course that got shared all around too. The things people throw away these days.

ParticipantStudies show about half of all food on America is wasted. There may be an ethical requirement for some of us to eat from dumpsters.

Funny thing.
I have a recurring issue with gutter punks (the ones that sit there high and ask you for change as you walk by) parking in front of my office (we are near Ichiban).
One of the things I have said to them to get them to go is to remind that them that essentially, I am doing the same thing. Please don’t crowd.December 28, 2011 at 7:26 PM #735118urbanrealtor
ParticipantOf course I did grow up in a norcal old hippie town…. but anyway….
