Before you get all Karen Carpenter on me, realize this: Those Somali pirates were hijacking an aid ship with food for starving Africans. I don’t know how you’d turn that around into an anti-American rant, but feel free.

The notion that they’re out there hijacking ships solely to help their families is laughable, and no more believable than the notion that their land based brethren were hijacking humanitarian aid for the same reason when we intervened in 1993.

Of course, it’s so much more simple to just blame the big, bad old U.S. of A for all the world’s ills, isn’t it? You know we made Kim Jong-il fire that missile, right?

At first glance, I am not looking at the hijacking from an international relations perspective. I see it as a working man being put at the point of a gun. Shoot them. Don’t mess with people when they are working for a living.

On the other hand the Pro U.S.A bravado is embarrassing. Killing is serious, always. So it has to be done. Being glad about it seems to say the opposite of blame the U.S. or A for everything. And, which working man was put at the point of a gun? The captain of the Maersk Alabama? Certainly not the pirates, right? That captain had every right to be there, whether from a rule of law perspective (right of free passage on the open seas) or a humanitarian perspective (delivering food to starving people).

What I said had nothing to do with USA bravado. I spoke of the right of self defense. You’re conflating the Alabama and her crew somehow with US imperialism and nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a cheap plot device and without any basis in fact.

The Alabama and crew not only had a right to be there, they were fulfilling a moral good by doing so. They were attacked without provocation and without basis by pirates and the US intervened to save them. Show me where I’m wrong and how this is a “might makes right” scenario and try to do it without insulting me.
