We bought a Maltese/Poodle mix a few months ago. He does not shed a hair. He is black and we have a white duvet, so it would be obvious if he did. His chest and soul-patch beard are both the Maltese white. He is very cute and so smart.

All dogs shed. If you cant deal with that, get a fish. Some much less than others, but you will find hairs from any dog. The longer the hair, the more it sheds, especially in our oh so challenging climate.
Weimaraners and vizlas are awsome dogs and I have never had trouble training a single one. I have never known anyone who was trouble with training them. I always hear about it, but then when I actually meet someone with one they are all smiles. They need HUGE amounts of exercise though. A walk around the block just wont do it. My brother takes his vizla on 10 mile mountain bike rides and she is running the whole way. These dogs are the type that will take a bullet for you or your kids and will know what they are doing when they do it.
If you dont have the time to dedicate to a sporting breed, get a yellow lab or a terrior if poodles dont suit you. Their hairs are short and need little grooming. Labs can have alot of hip/joint problems and certain terriors can have their own problems. Both are great dogs. Just buy from a good breeder or you can be on the hook for alot of $$$. Getting a stray/pound animals is one of the greatest ways to get a dog, just know that if you are REALLY specific about the breed it may not be for you.
The best advice I can give is to find a vet you trust, and then have them help you find the dog for you. I dont know how many times I have seen people with dogs that just dont suit them cause they fell in love with the puppy in the window.

April 22, 2008 at 12:44 PM #192458svelteParticipantI’m with you, Bugs. We are about a year behind you in your situation and not looking forward to having to make the decision at all.
And we have come to the same conclusion – no more pets. But the house will sure be quiet then.
