ParticipantI am updating my kitchen as well, see Kitchen appliance thread and we are on a budget also. I definitely vote for a D/W. It saves money (as brian said) and disinfects better, it will use much hotter water than hand, unless you are wearing gloves and washing using very hot water, which sounds like not (water through fingers). I know what you mean about being on a budget. Try looking at Sears, especially if noise is not a big factor for you w/the D/W. If you still want to wash by hand, then you have that option.
Side note – who is doing your cabinets? Curious.

Participant@profhoff and UCGal, I looked at the drawer unit you two suggested and although sleek, it seems to be about twice of what I was looking to spend. =)
@CBad, that’s the option I was gearing towards until I went appliance browsing over the weekend and saw a decent looking one for about $550. since i’m redoing the entire place, i don’t need to have the hookups there if i don’t want ’em! i’ll need to think about how often i’ll use it… maybe i’ll love it once I try it out?
@jpinpb, yes!!! I’ve been reading that thread religiously and was going to go check out the Sears outlet closer to a time when i’l be purchasing everything.I’m going to have my dad and uncle install everything for me. My uncle has worked as a general contractor and loves helping out family! We’re going to go with standard cabinets to save money… so I haven’t quite decided on exactly which cabinets as I will be buying them separately… =)

Participantit’s oddly fun to wash dishes, have kids dry with towels and put everything away. you kinda have to wash em off some to put em in the dishwasher anyway. family fun. sort of.
i think dishwashers are made superfficient nowadays, but if you soak scrub do a quick rinse, then towel dry i bet that kills most stuff. maybe those germs left oevr are essential for health…?
