Traditional American values were self sufficiency. There are still some of us out there. Part of the health care plan that Pelosi was pushing is manditory insurance (you have no choice to opt out), in spite of the fact that insurance doesn’t really reduce cost. Insurance’s only benefit is the reduction of risk (distributes the risk across the client base).
I agree ucodegen. But in order to return to those values we need to dismantle the social safety net. I could support that if we were truly honest at returning to those values of self-sufficiency.
Remember that the Right now is arguing against universal health care because of rationing. The Right should SUPPORT rationing (including medicare benefits). If citizens want something beyond the minimum (socialized health care or not) they should save and pay for it themselves.
Maybe honesty should start at home.

October 5, 2009 at 3:27 PM #464029Allan from FallbrookParticipant
Yes, we are more politically correct, but that’s how our society has evolved rather than simply the results of the efforts of a few strong voices in the radical left (such as Jesse Jackson who is not quite politically correct).
“God damn America” was certainly not something politically correct to say. You criticize the Rev. Wright for having said it but you fail to understand the nuances and the context of that statement. And yet, you expect other to understand the nuances of your own writing. In some instances, a Reverend of the right might have made that same statement (perhaps with regard to abortion).
If as you say, leftist ideas of political correctness have permeated large segments of American society, then that is simply part of the organic change in our society.
People also expect clean air and clean water. And children shouldn’t be working in coal mines.
People now expect political correctness in political discourse and corporate settings. What’s wrong with that? Customs and mores change over time.
What I was getting at is that the right has been very successful at giving powerful voices to some individuals such as Beck and Limbaugh. Those pundits are able to whip up their legions of followers into action. There is nothing equivalent on the left.
ucodegen, regarding Pelosi, my cousin tells me that she doesn’t really listen to Pelosi. But she always looks for Pelosi on TV to see what she’s wearing. My cousin loves Pelosi’s pearls. ;)
Brian: Thanks for making my point (see your last paragraph on Pelosi: Complete and total non-answer to a very pointed statement).
Political Correctness doesn’t have dick to do with cultural mores. It is a direct product of a group (the Left) pushing an agenda. Political Correctness has everything to do with controlling language, symbols and icons and in a very Marxist/Marxian way. There is no evolution at work here. We, as a country and culture, weren’t “moving” in that direction. A good example of the nonsensical nature of the PC “thought police” is the use of the term African-American. I have a bunch of black friends, including a lot of the guys I coach with and lift weights with. You know how many refer to themselves as African-Americans? Try none. Not a one. They nearly universally refer to themselves as black, as I do.
Or, how about “physically challenged”. We’re supposed to use that because the term “handicapped” is offensive. Except it isn’t. Someone with no legs in a wheel chair IS handicapped. They can’t walk, which IS a handicap. Referring to them as physically challenged doesn’t ameliorate the situation one bit.
It is, however, perversely Orwellian, in that it shapes how we think and speak and, ultimately, act, which is EXACTLY what it was designed to do. So, spare me this self-serving bullshit about mores and the direction of thought and speech in this country. Same thing with the “vast right wing conspiracy”, which was the cute term that Hillary Clinton coined right before she realized that Monica Lewinsky was actually sucking her husband’s dick. And, no, they weren’t seeking to impeach him for a blow job, they were seeking to impeach him for suborning perjury, which as a lawyer and sitting President is kind of a no-no.
Again and again, we’re treated to this same nonsense from the Left: “A vast, overarching conspiracy, originating on the right, and filled with bigots, zealots, racists and assorted other kooks, is out to stop those of us on the Left, who are simple folk, armed only with good hearts and good intentions, and who only want the best for our citizens”. Unfortunately, neither history nor facts support that and the Dems are just as greedy, venal and corrupt as the Repubs (Charlie Rangel, anyone?).

We now find Rock-n-Roll perfectly acceptable but Conservatives in the 50s certainly didn’t.

Yeah. Thought so.
