Allan, you have to recognize that the radical right is better at it.
Actually, the left is. If you can recognize their drivel as drivel without thinking about it.. then you know they aren’t that good. If you are tempted to accept it as the truth, then you know they are good at dressing up the drivel to make it acceptable. It is the essence of being a good salesmen and to get the mark to not think about their purchase.
by drivel, I mean empty rhetoric, polemic and vitriol…
ucodegen, I don’t see an equivalent to Rush on the left — someone who despite his own personal failings still commands a huge fanatical audience.
Are you saying that Rush listeners easily recognize Rush’s ramblings as drivel? If so, then why does his audience keep on tuning in?
I believe that there are a few Piggs who are adherents of Rush, Beck and Fox News. And Piggs are generally smart. Or are they idiots who can’t recognize drivel?
That about the huge Christian base who listens to their preachers and only vote on abortion and creationism?
Brian: While Rush might be emblematic of what you refer to, the fact is that the Left is just as able and has been just as effective in propagandizing and radicalizing elements of the Democratic Party. You’re an excellent example of this (and not meant pejoratively, but as a statement of fact).
Your responses to nearly everything that could be construed as criticism of the Left, is to respond, “Yeah, but the Republicans/Rush/etc have… Insert complaint here”. You also conveniently ignore or brush off facts or construe them in such a way as to either minimize their importance or declare them irrelevant.
Yes, unfortunately for you, the Left operates in lockstep, much like certain elements of the Republican Party. Examples being the Left’s silence on things like the corrosive effects of gangsta rap (fear of offending blacks, Jesse Jackson, Sharpton, etc), their circling the wagons on the recent Roman Polanski arrest, and anything having to do with breaking the choke hold that unions have (our fine State of California being an excellent example with the California Teacher’s Association standing front and center).
Yes, the Left has used Political Correctness, racism and bigotry to stifle debate on a whole range of issues. Examples being their willingness to cry “racism” and “bigotry” whenever anyone of note calls Obama on various topics, like healthcare or the economy. The dialogue and debate are therefore effectively controlled through the use of “acceptable” language, which, last time I checked, heavily infringes on my constitutional right of free speech.
Yes, the Left has co-opted elementary and high schools, along with colleges and the media, as far as curricula, agenda and viewpoints go. Do a little research on professors like Cornel West and Ward Churchill, writers like John Zerzan and Susan Sontag, as well as Black Studies, Hispanic Studies and Women’s Studies programs at major universities. These people and programs are a direct result of the radicalization that began during the 1960s counter-cultural movement and has now infected all levels of American education.
Rush Limbaugh was not a phenomenon of the Right. Rather, he was a natural reaction to the constant drumbeat emanating from the Left telling us how to think, act and speak. I don’t support Rush, nor do I listen to him, but I too grew progressively more disgusted with the constant propagandizing that the Left was doing and I fight back in my own way.
Do your research, Brian, and, most importantly, be honest with yourself. Look at what you’re saying and what informs your opinions. I think if you exercise a little intellectual rigor, you might be in for surprise.
We don’t call it the “Right” for nothing. =)

Too easy.. I pick Pelosi.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/10/tight-spot-pelosi-calls-health-care-critics-american/Traditional American values were self sufficiency. There are still some of us out there. Part of the health care plan that Pelosi was pushing is manditory insurance (you have no choice to opt out), in spite of the fact that insurance doesn’t really reduce cost. Insurance’s only benefit is the reduction of risk (distributes the risk across the client base).
It is also NOT un-American to criticize or discuss controversial issues. In fact, it is quite American to do it. Unlike other countries, we air our dirty laundry and debate it.. America was formed by non-conformists.
As for additional failings of Pelosi; how about the fact that she, in concert with Barney Frank and Reines blocked all attempts to further regulate the GSEs as well as additional regs on banks during the 2005-2007 period. I could refer you to youtube videos of the congressional action, but oddly, these have been taken down. Unfortunately I was not able to ‘capture’ them before this time.
One thing to realize about congress, many have driven at least one business into the ground. Several of them have questionable criminal records.
http://www.ontheissues.org/AskMe/spousal_abuse.htm
— no party particulars here. some cited numbers:
* 29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.
* 7 have been arrested for fraud.
* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks.
* 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.
* 3 have been arrested for assault.
* 71 have credit reports so bad they can’t qualify for a
credit card.
* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.
* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting.
* 21 are current defendants in lawsuits.
* And in 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional immunity. The telling aspect of skill at leading the people on, is that the people don’t realize they are being controlled. I also think that Rush Limbaugh’s alleged popularity is not real. How do you tell how many people are listening to the radio? Radios don’t call in and ‘rat’ on you.
As for Fox news, they picked up on several stories that the rest of the news avoided. I listen to both (Fox and so called mainstream). I like Beck in only that he gets into stories that the rest of the media is avoiding. Unfortunately he gets a bit too extreme come-on Beck, quit it with the tears.

October 5, 2009 at 3:11 PM #464009briansd1GuestAllan, I think that you’ve identified certain trends in American society. Yes, we are more politically correct, but that’s how our society has evolved rather than simply the results of the efforts of a few strong voices in the radical left (such as Jesse Jackson who is not quite politically correct).
“God damn America” was certainly not something politically correct to say. You criticize the Rev. Wright for having said it but you fail to understand the nuances and the context of that statement. And yet, you expect other to understand the nuances of your own writing. In some instances, a Reverend of the right might have made that same statement (perhaps with regard to abortion).
If as you say, leftist ideas of political correctness have permeated large segments of American society, then that is simply part of the organic change in our society.
We now find Rock-n-Roll perfectly acceptable but Conservatives in the 50s certainly didn’t.
Like in real estate, home buyers now pretty much expect one bathroom per bedroom. Or they expect at least a two-car garage.
People also expect clean air and clean water. And children shouldn’t be working in coal mines.
People now expect political correctness in political discourse and corporate settings. What’s wrong with that? Customs and mores change over time.
What I was getting at is that the right has been very successful at giving powerful voices to some individuals such as Beck and Limbaugh. Those pundits are able to whip up their legions of followers into action. There is nothing equivalent on the left.
ucodegen, regarding Pelosi, my cousin tells me that she doesn’t really listen to Pelosi. But she always looks for Pelosi on TV to see what she’s wearing. My cousin loves Pelosi’s pearls. π
October 5, 2009 at 3:11 PM #464200briansd1GuestAllan, I think that you’ve identified certain trends in American society.
