It’s not something that customers opt into. It’s a default “benefit” provided by big banks. Credit Unions are better not but free of guilt.
BTW, there is no merchant return fee unless it’s a check. And even then, checks are processed instantly by many merchants will give the check right back to the merchant at the point of sale.
To protect consumers, it’s better not to allow them to overdraw their accounts in the first place. When consumers have no money, they should not be given “loans” at interest rates of thousands of percents.
