Thanks to FlyerInHi & AN for answering my questions.
AN, what brand is your AC unit ? Goodman ?
Also, on what month of the year did you replace your AC ?
Yes, they’re Goodman. The model is: SSX160481A & GMVC950704CX. I didn’t have AC before but the house was preplumbed for AC. I got it installed around April.
It looks like GMVC950704CX is a furnace. Did you replace the furnace at the same time ? Was the $2000 the labor for the AC only or both AC & furnace ?

I just looked back at that email chain and the total to do everything was $4500. Which was cheaper than if I would have bought the unit online and pay him $2k for install.
September 3, 2015 at 6:10 PM #789127FlyerInHiGuestYou got great deal AN.
The quotes you mentions at 9k to 12k seemed high for just AC but make sense with a new furnace.
When i had AC Installed for my parents, they your kept the same old furnace which was fine. But there’s something to the said about new everything.
BTW, does anyone have a variable speed system? I’ve never had one of those.
September 3, 2015 at 8:40 PM #789130ltsdddParticipantI got two units, a 3 and a 4 ton 13 seer R-22, installed by one of the companies the OP mentioned for $6K even. The house was pre-plumbed. I picked one of the cheaper brands that they carried. The coil runs a bit noisy, but when the ac is running I have no business being outside so that has no effect on me. As for the efficiency, I didn’t think I would use it enough to justify paying for a more efficient one.
BTW., I would seriously consider the wall-mount single room ac if I didn’t already have central ac. I think the single room ac is much more energy efficient – cool the room you’re in and not the entire floor.
September 3, 2015 at 9:39 PM #789131La Jolla RenterParticipantI am having a new 5 ton system installed with new furnace, ducts, and zone dampers for 14k. I took the house down to the studs, so it made sense to just start with a fresh new system. Just finished drywall so will update my thoughts on the system in a couple months.

ltsdd,
You had duel ACs, right ? How old were the AC units when you replace them ?
Did you replace the furnace also ?
September 4, 2015 at 3:35 PM #789144FlyerInHiGuestItsdd, I’m interested how you will control the dampers.
i never had them but would like to.September 4, 2015 at 5:32 PM #789146ltsdddParticipant

I got two units, a 3 and a 4 ton 13 seer R-22, installed by one of the companies the OP mentioned for $6K even. The house was bought pre-plumbed for AC but I didn’t have AC installed until about 7-8 years ago.
I think they’re dual ACs – two separate coils/fans outside, two separate copper lines feed into two separate condensors(?) that they installed in the attic. Two thermostats, one for each floor.

If you’re referring to the central ac, they are two separate units controlled by two separate thermostats – 1 for each floor.September 5, 2015 at 11:34 AM #789162FlyerInHiGuestI meant to ask la jolla renter how he will open and close the dampers. I guess a knob on the wall in each room.
