ParticipantNot sure if you’d consider Alamo (I typically don’t rent from them), but here is a story I just happened to read this week. The good side is Alamo addressed the problem and even found other billing errors.

ParticipantYou shouldn’t have any problems with renting a car in Europe if you go through the normal channels ie expedia etc. There is a company called Sixt http://www.sixt.com/ which I often use in France as they tend to be a little cheaper and shorter lines. Otherwise its the usual international companies you get anywhere in the world. You can of course lease/buy a car which is quite popular alternative to rental, but I’m not sure what the advantages are.

ParticipantKev,
Took the family to Europe last summer and we put about 4,500km on a rental car traveling from Germany to Italy and Belgium etc…the car rental itself was pretty inexpensive, we went with Hertz and I think our total for a little Opal Meriva for 2 weeks was like $250 US. With the poor exchange rate now, it’ll be more. Get ready for shocking fuel prices, though. Gas is about $7.50 per gallon there, or about 1.40 euro per liter. We had an advantage in that I was able to get gas ration coupons through the US military installations, so I paid stateside prices for gas in Germany and Italy. Huge savings there!
Have fun, I highly recommend traveling by car if you like to do your own thing…that’s why we picked it.

ParticipantThanks everyone for the great advice.
djkimd, thanks, will send you an email.Trojan4Life, that’s one of the reasons I wanted to drive instead using Eurail. I feel driving you just get a more intimate feel for the area and it also offers so much more flexibility. I hear you about the gas prices, shocking indeed! When I visited Europe last in 2006 the Euro was at 1.2, hopefully it will not go higher than what it is currently.

GuestDefinitely if you want to travel accross Europe, I would go with international providers like Hertz, Avis, etc. But be careful to read all conditions and see if the prices offered to you are all inclusive. There are many companies who cause troubles if you need any extra service, like http://www.moneywise.co.uk/scams-rip-offs/rip-offs/don-t-fall-car-hire-con-tv . I always rent with http://www.carrental.ro, they have prices pre-negotiated with providers in ther countries as well. Much cheaper and so far the service has been great. Also, pay attention so that you have full Casco insurance on your car when you take it, and I wouldn’t rent a car older than 3 years, then you risk accidents.

ParticipantI have rented from SIXT a couple of times. Great prices. WARNING: You need to ensure you do a full walk-thru on the car noting all dents, scratches, etc, no matter how small. They keep good records and are very particular about that when you return the car.
