ParticipantI want to say, I’ve mostly enjoyed the OT discussions here. Economics is my main interest, real estate markets, credit meltdown, etc. Same time, there’s a lot going on in the world right now and it’s been interesting debating with the SMART people on Piggs about foreign policy, fiscal policy, politics, etc.
The signal-to-noise as of late has been really degrading though. Lots of topics and posts here recently that are just crap. Partisans political types trolling the site, posting lies and rumors devoid of fact. Doesn’t belong on Piggingtons. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was actually organized, connected to the campaigns somehow. Some of the Obama discussions are even beginning to get a bit racist, which is disturbing but predictable given the turn of events in recent weeks, front-page on most of today’s newspapers.
I think the ability to flag the ‘noise’ topics and posts as abuse would definitely improve the site, keep the discussions interesting and reasonable, not aggravating. The trolls would probably go elsewhere.

ParticipantGreat idea. I always skip the “OT” topics that appear politically related, but it seems like they have overtaken the real estate related topics lately.

ParticipantInstead of that, may I suggest the readers exercise self-restraint and not dignify truly nasty posts by adding comments and allow the thread to wither away by inattention rather than deletion. That way, we can avoid starting a flame war on “censorship” vs. “free speech”.
