Does this Fall seem colder than usual to everyone? It does to me, although I don’t know if that is actually the case. I know we had an unusually cool summer this year, and this may just be a continuation of that weather pattern.
kpbs had a story the other day about la nina. el nino and la nina technically have to do with ocean temperatures in various regions… and apparently we’re in a la nina. This translates to colder, wetter winter, and dryer spring/summer in 2011. Potential for fire issues. At least that’s what I think I remember hearing.
My wife has been relating what she is hearing on KPBS radio regarding the alleged current “la nina’ year. She says they are saying that we will have cold and rain now and a drier January and February. Of course if the rain cuts off that early it could also portend a high fire potential, even with a normal summer.

November 28, 2010 at 11:51 AM #633639AKParticipantLooks like we can expect a cooler-than-average winter and spring:

If it’s any consolation … Alaska’s looking at a cold winter too.

So cold that on a quiet night, that when you take a hot cup of coffee and throw it in the air. You’ll hear a weak crack sound and the coffee turns instantly to snow before drifting to the ground. (-40F)
So cold that the snow covered roads are no longer slippery.(-20F) (Its like driving on something similar to hard compacted dirt – watch out for where a car has been idling though, like at the stoplights).
