OT: Best place to sell car (private party)?

I had great success using http://www.cars.com listing service. This was about two years ago.

Craigslist is the way to go. Before listing it, go to Carmax for a cash offer that is good for a specified period of time (I think its 7 days or 300 miles). I would recommend getting the Carmax offer and using that to counter any offers you get on Craigslist. It’s good to have in case people want to dicker with you on price. I have found Carmax’s offers to be more than fair, often much higher than a dealer trade-in offer. And you don’t have to smog before selling.

It depends on the car. I think craigslist is best for cars under $10,000, Classic Trader for classics, and traderpub.com was better for higher priced cars. But it has been about two years since I have sold a car. Get advise from people that sold comparable cars to yours in the last 4-6 months. The auto market has really changed in that time.

I bought a new truck last year from dealer.. the dealer offered me 13k for my old one (which was paid off). I said no, went home posted it on Craigslist and took a nap.

20 minutes into my nap my cell phone rang, picked it up, guy said can I come look at it, I say yeah.. I go back to sleep thinking it was not a strong lead or something he didn’t seem serious. About 1 hour later I hear someone knocking on the door.. I show him the truck he gives me $21000 cash and we’re done. Craigslist!!
