Yes, this is true if I selected a phone which did not require a data plan.
No, not true. You can buy an iPhone for $199 upon signing a two-year contract. Some other smart phones are free w/ contract.
You can revert back to your old non-smart phone and services anytime. You simply can’t cancel within two year without paying the penalty.
BTW, since you like to take road trips, I think that you’re missing out without a data plan. But that’s just me.
brian, I’m sure you know that ALL the smart phones, including the i-phone require some kind of monthly data plan. I would have to pay that monthly fee for 24 months even if I sold the phone and did not use the data plan.
I can’t read the small phone screens very well. I would prefer using my notebook computer with a 14″ screen if I am online away from my desk. My kid goes on the road with me a lot so I can ask them to run a GPS for me if I need it. I have a lot of paper maps, also. I usually travel to areas that I am already familiar with. Since I am usually the driver, I obviously cannot get online myself unless I am pulled over.
Almost all the motor lodges have wifi access in the rooms and lobby. There IS an AT&T USB device available for about $100 that plugs into a laptop or notebook computer to enable it to get internet access from anywhere there is a cell tower. However, I believe this service costs $60 month. Depending on hours spent on the internet, it might be cheaper to pay up to $30 mo for a smartphone data plan and tether the phone to the computer inside your vehicle. If you stayed in remote campgrounds on the weekends with a pop-up tent or RV or decided to spend a year on the road, having this device and service would be ideal for those who have to do work on a computer and/or can’t see a smartphone screen very well :=]

Not true. Just call them.
You could have lost your iPhone and had to revert back to the old phone.March 22, 2011 at 4:21 PM #679727briansd1Guest
I would have to pay that monthly fee for 24 months even if I sold the phone and did not use the data plan.
