Hey Ucgal, One more lettuce tip. You can just start a mass planting in a pot and tease them apart when they are about two inches tall. Learned it on youtube, it works. It’s a great time to start. You can start them outdoors now or in a nice southern window sill.
Good tip, Russell. We’re in process of weeding and prepping our planting beds right now… And goal is to start some seeds this weekend. (We’ve got a bunch of egg crates ready to start ’em).Last year you had giant watermelons pretty early in the season compared to us. What time of year did you plant them? We planted around May and had very tasty melons in October. I know we need to start them earlier this year. Just trying to figure out the best time.

January 28, 2011 at 8:36 AM #658997NotCrankyParticipantThis is a great calendar,I think this is the right zone for you but you can type in your zip to make sure. http://www.veggieharvest.com/Vegetable-Planting-Calendar/zone
I started the watermelon you know about at various times in May. If you are going to plant only once, I would say try it about 45-60 days before your hottest weather of the year. You are right that you could start a little earlier. Try to buy 90 day or less varieties. The world record type take 120 days though.
Edit: The link didn’t work quite right. If you want to see the calendar you can select it from the list of menus to right of linked page.
