I know you said “no italian or asian” but …
Favorite hole-in-the-wall: House of Nan-king.
CDMA Eng likes this place. It’s not really American-Italian. It’s Italian. You’ll like it.
http://cafetiramisu.com/The soup in sf sourdogh bowls is pretty nice. That fresh sourdough bread is awesome – something they probably don’t have in HK.
Fresh whole crab that you crack yourself is always fun, too.
Check out the web site for TV shows called “THe Best Thing I ever Ate.” I’m sure they’ll have lots of suggestions for good stops on a progressive dinner.
Also, somebody made a web site that maps all the places from “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” which is chock-full of interesting eateries.

One fun part is that, while you wait for your table, you can go next door (without going outside) to the Sir Francis Drake for a drink…they have some sort of agreement going. The lobby of the SFD is very cool, looks like it hasn’t changed in 100 years, very tall space, seems like all the guests are from Europe too.
And John’s Grill leans towards steakhouse, though it’s not. The fun part there is the decor and the tightness of the tables…they are very close together and you get to know your neighbors. Sit on the second floor if you get the choice…they have had live piano every time we’ve been there. One time we got a table that wasn’t the greatest..the maitre’D noticed we were getting jostled from time to time and offered us a free drink and dessert, without us saying a word about it. Now that’s caring!

A progressive dinner is where you have appetizer, main-course, and dessert at three different places. Make sure they are well-known for something in that category.
If you like, add a pre-dinner drink course and find a wine-bar or cocktail lounge before appetizers.
SF is a great place for this because you can make a nice, walkable progressive dinner.
This way you can mix it up a bit – go to a dive for appetizers and a nice place for dinner.
Take an hour for each course so you don’t get full…..[/quote]
This sounds interesting. I’m going to try something like this next time I go. I usually shop at Trader Joe’s in SOMA after I get in and “assess” the groceries and then “eat in” there b/c I have kids who live there. I’ve also BBQ’d there with kids’ friends (yes, there ARE BY’s in SF)!
I would prefer drinks at one place, then apps at another place, then maybe dessert at another place, then back “home” on the bus to some wine and/or coffee drink. I can’t eat a multiple-course meal and continue to climb steep hills to and from bus stops. And I wouldn’t want to park at a meter and then drink as a 2.5 mile drive “home” could take 40 mins (and lead straight thru an impromptu DUI checkpoint). And valet pkg is VERY expensive. :=[

Bagdad must have been a beautiful place at one point. Really sad what’s happened to the country.
