All in balance, my good man.People sometimes ask me, you’re rich, why don’t you buy better stuff? I tell them, you don’t get to be rich by spending money. If that was how it worked, everyone would be rich!

Oh no, it takes money to make money. Sorry.

Totally agree, it’s a fine balance. Most people do not live solely for the future. We all have to make a decision whether a particular purchase will adversely affect your future goal. Some people would spend minimally now till they save $10m+ (just some arbitrary number) while others would say, I can make me happy now and settle for only $5M for retirement. There’s no right or wrong. It’s just different for everyone. Again, my point is, on average, those who buy $100k car or watch probably already have millions in the bank and are not leveraging to buy those luxury goods.July 16, 2012 at 6:50 PM #748158flyerParticipantNeat watch, Desmond. I’ve had to work on mine (because no watch guy would take the chance) myself to keep it running, but still really enjoy wearing it.
Have to agree with both trains of thought regarding money, since, by nature, we’re very conservative.
We enjoy having great “stuff,” but enjoy the art of the deal even more. Got the house in RSF for a song years ago. Bought some planes and helicopters, and leased them back to some flight schools and sightseeing companies around the country which worked out well on many levels–and so on with other investments.
In some cases it seems you get rich by spending money, in others–the less you spend the better.

flyer, believe it or not, I saw a one-story house that needed updating (cosmetic fixer) in Fairbanks Ranch in either late ’93 or early ’94 for $274K! IIRC, it was just over 3K sf on a 20K+ sf lot. I KNOW great deals were to be had in the RE downturn of the ’90’s (when many longtime residents fled the county for other locales).
We could have easily qualified to buy it at the time but it would have been a VERY inconvenient location for us and we were averse to “covenant rules” and the addt’l cost of living within it.

I’ve always been an Omega fan and I looked at the Rolex Perpetual Oyster before buying the Seamaster. After talking to some Rolex owners (and hearing some pretty harsh criticisms), I decided on the Omega. Never regretted it.
If I did buy another watch, I’d probably go with a Kobold. A buddy of mine, who is a former SEAL, has one and has beat the everlovin’ shit outta the thing. The watch, according to him, has taken all of this punishment without breaking a sweat. They’re pricey, but apparently worth it.
Can you share what are/were some of the criticisms? Do you know if Omega have the same criticism? I like the Rolex Datejust, although I still like the Constellation’s band better.I agree about the Omega holding up extremely well. There were a few times where I accidentally bang the face against some hard corner. Some of the cheaper watch would have crack or shatter the face but with the Omega, there wasn’t even a single scratch. I also love the fact that I don’t need to replace battery. That’s a big plus for me.
Took a look at Kobold and they’re not my style. I don’t like leather/fabric bands and the few metal bands they have looks too busy for me.
UDT guys had team issued Rolexs. Not sure if they got to keep them afterwards.
My daily wearer is a Tag. It was a graduation gift. My wife for a wedding gift gave me a semi-custom Breitling. It is so Bling! It is actually a little on the obnoxious side but it so beautiful. I will leave it to my kid… If I ever have one. I took a look at the Vostok and they look pretty cool as well…

CE: Back in the day (mid-1980s) I knew a SEAL who’d been with Juliet Platoon in Vietnam and had picked up a Rolex Submariner in Saigon for some stupid cheap amount of money. He’d done two tours with the watch and then all sorts of other crazy shit during the 1970s and 1980s and the watch had performed flawlessly. By the time I laid eyes on it, it was pretty banged up, but kept excellent time. He told me a Rolex collector had offered him big money to sell it, saying that the Rolex movement had changed sometime in the late 1970s and these earlier watches were now worth a pretty penny due to better construction and the more accurate movement.
Far as I know, he still has the watch and it’s still ticking along.
Didn’t know the UDT/SEALs were issued Rolexes, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Fucking SEALs are like goddamn rockstars; they get all the good shit. We had to beg, borrow and steal just to get anything that wasn’t secondhand. Almost as bad as being in the Marines.
July 16, 2012 at 11:08 PM #748196flyerParticipantYes, BG, around 20 short years ago, there were many steals in RSF and many other places around San Diego that would blow people away today, but if the place you looked at wasn’t right for you in every way, probably best you didn’t take it on.

July 17, 2012 at 8:26 AM #748211HobieParticipantA realtor walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance then casually looks at his watch for a moment.
The woman notices this and asks, “Is your date running late?”
“No,” he replies, “I just got this state-of-the-art watch, and I was just testing it.”
The intrigued woman says, “A state-of-the-art watch? What’s so special about it?”
The realtor explains, “It uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically.”
The lady says, “What’s it telling you now?”
“Well, it says you’re not wearing any panties….”
“The woman giggles and replies, “Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!”
The realtor smirks, taps his watch and says, “Damn thing’s an hour fast.”July 17, 2012 at 9:24 AM #748215Diego MamaniParticipant
Lots of people still wear hats, me included. They are hardly restricted to photos and movies.
I meant the hats with brims all around them, like my grandfathers used to wear. Of course, baseball caps and the like are still being used. Or kids today put on a fedora to look “cute” and make a fashion statement, but that’s nothing like hats in the 1940s, when leaving your house hat-less (especially if wearing a suit and a tie) would have looked really weird.

Time to get a watch. 🙂
