Kinda like the optional essay question on the college application. Not required but it gives an insight about the person.

Cell phone cameras have not rendered good cameras obsolete, though they have by and large relegated pocket cameras to the dust bin of history, except for the fact that the flash on them is either useless or non existent.
About 2 months ago I was challenged by an iphone 4S user to a photo contest against my cheapy point and shoot (easily pocket size) Panasonic Lumix in somewhat low light conditions.
The iphone pic was barely discernible, whereas the shot with my Lumix was pretty good (particularly if I left the shutter open for a few seconds).
I still think a decent point and shoot has it’s place and is much better than any cell phone camera.

I agree about the Omega holding up extremely well. There were a few times where I accidentally bang the face against some hard corner. Some of the cheaper watch would have crack or shatter the face but with the Omega, there wasn’t even a single scratch. I also love the fact that I don’t need to replace battery. That’s a big plus for me.
AN: I talked to quite a few people, and the majority of the criticisms boiled down to:
– Rolex movement didn’t keep accurate time over time (they apparently lose a coupla minutes every month),
– Poor seals and gaskets (my SEAL buddy had persistent problems with misting inside the crystal after dives),
– Cracked/broken crystals (this is a big plus with the Omega sapphire crystal; mine has never scratched or broken and I’ve treated the watch pretty roughly).I’ve taken the Omega diving (just don’t take it in the shower: Soap will destroy the gaskets/seals), climbing, hunting (including holding it right next to some fairly powerful rifles/shotguns) and on numerous construction sites. Nary a peep of complaint.

Agree … except for the (exceptionally high-quality) Cybershot phones (no longer in production).

These phones are actually cameras (first and foremost) and a phone/wi-fi/music player secondarily and hold 8G of memory. A fantastic daily “tool” (unlocked and debranded, of course) :=]
July 15, 2012 at 3:37 PM #748063bearishgurlParticipantBack on topic, I’ve always been partial to Citizen. I prefer the mixed gold/silver band with white face or gold band with black solid face and mini-diamond at 12 o’clock.
My next watch will be a Citizen Eco-Drive gold/silver “Signature Diamond.”

Do you wear them while you’re lifting, scaredy?
Just wondering . . .

July 15, 2012 at 4:40 PM #748069OxfordParticipantI don’t have a cell phone. I use the sun for time. At night I don’t care about the time. If I could, i’d eat mutton squatting by a fire in the woods naked.

Agreed 100%.
iPhone 4S… slow and jerky focus. Often takes multiple tries to get the image in focus. Zoom basically requires two hands. Tiny, mediocre optics. No lense protection, so it gets schmutzy if you keep it in a pocket. The LED “flash” often reflects off the phone case and leaves odd shadows on the image.
A real camera kicks its ass up and down the street many times over.
July 15, 2012 at 5:05 PM #748073flyerParticipantHave a vintage Bulova Accutron Astronaut given to me by my Dad, who collected watches. Have tried many others, but always go back to this one. Old-fashioned or not, love the watch and the memories that go along with it.
July 15, 2012 at 5:43 PM #748074KSMountainParticipant
Funny, outside the house, I feel NAKED without a watch. There are numerous times that I have to go back to the house few blocks away because I forgot my watch. My day is off if I’m not wearing a watch. When I was in college, I have few SWATCH watches. They were cool back then. Now I have a TAG but lusting for a ROLEX or a BREITLING.
I am like this, even though I usually have a cell phone with. I went from a Tag to a Rolex Explorer II. I needed the GMT hand. I’ve had it for 1.5 years and it’s been a joy every day. The bracelet and clasp are really nice in my opinion. If you don’t wear it for about 2 days it will stop. So ironically I guess a watch is kind of like a cellphone in that you have to “charge” it.
I like this thread!
July 15, 2012 at 5:45 PM #748075KSMountainParticipant
the watch is supposed to make you feel a certain way, and a fake is not going to produce that feeling…
Exactly. In fact, what feeling would it produce?…July 15, 2012 at 6:23 PM #748078CoronitaParticipant
based on my recent experience with archimede I’d say the odds are good a decent watch will keep its value in pace with inflation and that you probably won’t take a bath on a rolex or a breitling. Could be wrong, though.
for those of you lsutig after a particular expensive watch, let me ask you, would you ever consider wearing a “replica” (fake)? Personally, I am opposed, mainly because the watch is supposed to make you feel a certain way, and a fake is not going to produce that feeling… but the fakes look very persuasive nowadays
That reminds me. I do have a Lolex too….Yes, it’s a Lolex, the got the R and the L wrong…..
