ParticipantI believe that’s exactly what the Santee city council is trying to do. I vaguely remember sometime ago reading something about developing the area with golf course homes, and they are building that big sports park. (Not to mention all our neighborhood parks.) This all sounds like the stuff they have been doing in other building boom areas. They have been trying to get in move up housing for years. They have been saying people have to move out to move up, that we have plenty of starter homes.
The large majority of folks on this blog feel Santee is nothing but a big hick town. I however grew up here, and have been raising my kids here. I think Santee is the perfect place to put in roots and raise kids.
The condos on the west end were put there after the kmart went out, it was building boom time and the city changed the
zoning from business to residential. They couldn’t get Fanita Ranch passed so they snuck in houses/condos in every available spot imaginable. 1100 or so homes, while people were distracted focusing on Fanita. Now we have new building at every school in the district, with plans to modernize every school. New media technology centers, libraries, and for the first time actual jr high schools 6-8th grad being built. Santee has always had k-8 schools.
We were told that the new Fanita Ranch area would have new schools, but now the school enrollment is so low, the district says they don’t need it. The kids will be going to 2 different (already existing)schools.

ParticipantIf you believe that the “La Jolla of East County” can somehow support a few thousand $600,000+ homes over the next 5 years, good luck.
I think the “Klantee” stigma sill reigns.

ParticipantI do believe that once San Diego’s population grows Santee will become more attractive to many middle-income families due to more affordable housing. However, it will never become “La Jolla of East County” due to its location away from the ocean and its history. The new developments on Rattlesnake Mountain by Lennar are nice but they are way overpriced, especially “Eaglecrest”. There is no way a buyer can make any profit within the next 10 years on a resale.

It is not that we are close to the ocean. It is supposed to be “The jewel”,”the nicer area”, “the most expensive property”.
We do have the best schools in east county. Our school district is among the tops in the state.
Santee is and has ALWAYS been a good area at a far price. We have ALWAYS been a popular place for middle income families.

ParticipantThe future of Santee looks brighter than many other cities in the County. Comparing to Escondido, it has no mega auto dealerships to lose tax revenue. Comparing to San Marcos (where I used to live) it has no over-supply inventory of homes. Comparing to Oceanside and Carlsbad, it has no tourism-dependent economy. It’s already the city with the biggest potential in the East County and now its future looks brighter than the above-mentioned North County cities, not to mention lower crime rate too.
Retail segment of Santee focuses on stuffs that average people need/want to buy, whether in good time or bad. Stores like Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and supermarkets are here to stay and will continue to generate steady revenue for the city. Most restaurant cater to middle-class so even though they will take a hit in this economy, their long term prospect is still quite positive. Santee is a good place to call home because it has all the shopping & dining options that middle class Americans need/want, without the feeling of being too big or too “touristy”, and it’s a relatively safe neighborhood.
I’ve been on overseas assignment for the past 5 years but have been keeping up with news of SD on a daily basis, and see that numerous cities are in distress with falling revenue and necessary cut-backs, including SD, Escondido and Oceanside and San Marcos. However it’s my understanding that the city of Santee is still financially sound. I’m not aware of any cut-back, layoff, postponement of city projects that has already started or withdrawal of any major big-box store. The Fanita Ranch housing development will probably be postponed but that’s actually good for existing homeowners and the value of their home.
Santee will probably never be the “La Jolla of East” and it shouldn’t. It has its own character and value that are closely in-tune with middle-class families. As a soon-to-be homeowner of Santee, I wouldn’t mind seeing the value of my home goes up in time but it should not be the next “rich people’s playground” community.
If one day I start seeing Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Aston Martin on the street regularly, that’d be the day I sell my home…for a killer profit, of course… and look for the next up-and-coming middle-class community.

Participant“However it’s my understanding that the city of Santee is still financially sound. ”
It is absolutely sound. They operate on a surplus. We are not even raising sales tax!
Piggington bloggers are tipically anti-Santee. They are angry and bitter(they often pretend they are different personalities to make it seem they are ganging up on you). You will find they don’t have anything better to do than pick fights with each other and name call or try to insult you for the way you feel.
Most the time that is all that is on here anymore. Which is why I check back every so often. Every once in a while, I find something I can use.
The houses are selling, and have been selling well here. It is because it has a short commute, close to freeways, has good schools, safe and relatively affordable neighborhoods. Our developing, and redeveloping, just keeps making it better. The area is well thought out.
We have a great fireworks celebration and the houses surrounding the sports park will have the best view/you can walk to the festivities.
The area you are talking about is VERY good right now(I am waiting for Fanita Ranch). Rio Seco, is at the moment, our top performing K-8 I believe. That sports park will be going in soon, this year I think. That whole area will be walkable- meaning you can walk to schools, parks, shopping. It is really nice.
I find the blog and SDLOOK UP very informative…you should check it out!
Anyway, good luck!

ParticipantIf you believe that the “La Jolla of East County” can somehow support a few thousand $600,000+ homes over the next 5 years, good luck.
I think the “Klantee” stigma sill reigns.
