I love it how, in the East Coast, you can get around much easier by public transport. That alone makes me a “weak, gutless, America-hating Communist/Socialist treehugger.”
[/quote]Brian: Quite true. As everyone knows, public transportation was started by Joe Stalin and Adolf Hitler. In point of fact, the Molotov – von Ribbentrop pact was actually more about establishing bus and trolley lines throughout Poland than creating an entente between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Slightly less well known is the fact that Benito Mussolini moonlighted as a ticket taker on the Rome to Naples train lines and, if you pay close attention to pictures of Il Duce, you’ll notice a ticket puncher in his waistband.

Maybe Americans would get on board with high-speed rail if our trains had nutsacks and lift kits?

October 29, 2010 at 1:32 PM #624281briansd1GuestCompared to Asia and Europe our public transport is very third world.
I doubt that Americans are ready to take public transport. We have already grown too fat and lazy to walk. We need the SUVs to carry around all the household items including the humongous baby strollers.
Trains have a chance to work in the North-Eastern Coast.
But So Cal to Last Vegas? I don’t think so. As it is now, there’s not even a direct bus line to the strip. You would think that there’d be a direct bus line to carry all the tourists to the strip.
Urban planning needs to be rethought if we are to have good public transport in So Cal. That will take at least another 5 decades.
I don’t have much hope. And that’s coming from someone who takes the Amtrak to OC and LA regularly.
