Not to paraphrase Denny Greene’s rant but …
Two consecutive weeks of the secondary getting torched. If not for a lucky bounce on a shanked punt and Rex Grossman this team would be 0-3.
A friend (and Jets fan) told me that Ted Cotrell is the worst defensive coach he has ever seen and I tend to agree. Cotrell said he was retiring after the Vikings fired him only to have AJ Smith bring him back from the dead. Nice call AJ. Merriman had zero solo tackles today and one assist. Either he needs some shipments of juice or Cotrell is not putting him in a position to make plays.
Things are going to get ugly. As much as I like LT, he gets very chippy when things don’t go his way. Well, we saw that today and now we’ll see what kind of control Norv has on this team. Rivers basically laughed at LT and told him to take a hike which I liked. Unfortunately, he then overthrew Jackson on 3rd and long which would have put the game away and then threw an INT to close things out.
Not a great response.
The Pats and Packers (and the Bears at least on defense)have shown how to beat the Chargers. Stack the box on defense and force Rivers to beat you. Spread the field on offense and make the secondary make plays. They’ll break down at some point. As much as everyone talks about Jamal Williams being a great run stopper, he gets no push into the backfield which allows the QB to step up. Favre is 80 years old and threw 45 passes today and only lost 6 yards on two sacks. The middle linbackers are horrible in pass coverage. Anyone remember Donnie Edwards? All he did was make plays all day long for a very reasonable salary.
AJ Smith has his players (Rivers over Brees, no Edwards, etc) and coaches that he longed for and this is the result so far. Somewhere on a golf course near Charlotte, NC Marty is probably enjoying a post round drink and smiling to himself.September 23, 2007 at 3:39 PM #85632SD RealtorParticipant
I really don’t even want to add critique because there is so much wrong it is quite disturbing. I don’t buy the talent line anymore…. In the NFL everyone has talent and the difference lies in the coaching, the gameplan and the execution. We are seriously lacking in all 3 of those categories. As horrid as we played we still had the ball twice in q4 with a 21 17 lead and Norv decided to run a few times into the line, leave rivers with a 3rd and 10 each time and predictably we didn’t convert either time. So yes we sucked today, our d was pathetic, and as bad as it was the coach or offensive coordinator or whoever the hell called the game in q4 sucked even more. Even NAR couldn’t put perfume on this pig.

NAR is forecasting that the Chargers will win their next 13 games although that forecast may change next week.September 23, 2007 at 6:09 PM #85637Allan from FallbrookParticipant
Not to pile on, but the decision to fire Schottenheimer is going to come back and haunt them big time. The loss of Cam Cameron was a big one, too.
The most dangerous time in the NFL right now is the NE Patriots. Not only possible to see them go undefeated, but I really believe that they are only going to get better as their talent pool gels and Brady gets more comfy with his new weapons.
And, trust me, as a Raiders fan, that last bit ain’t easy to say.September 23, 2007 at 6:47 PM #85638drunkleParticipant
meh. whatever. at least some under priviledged kids get free game tickets… how many now? 25 thousand kids? are there even that many poor kids in sd?
actually, this probably means i’ll get a couple free tickets tossed my way… who cares about the chargers, i’m down for the dogs and beers and a wasted afternoon…September 23, 2007 at 7:35 PM #85640larrylujackParticipant
the chargers have Phillip Rivers.
the Bears have bad Rex Grossman, enough said.
no comparison.September 24, 2007 at 6:12 AM #85665Alex_angelParticipant
The chargers are overhyped, housing is overpriced, gas is over priced, hmmmmmmm. Do you see the pattern?September 24, 2007 at 9:28 AM #85684ArtifactParticipant
If the Chargers would have hired one of the other coaching candidates – even one with no head coaching record like Singletary – I would be willing to cut them some slack as they adjust to the new coaching scheme. BUT they hired Norv Turner supposedly to help maintain some consistency because he was a coordinator here once. The guy has a losing record as a head coach no matter what team he has been with so I just can’t see any reason to cut them slack –
Hire a losing coach, get a losing team…
