Claremont is a big and diverse area to have an opinion on. Parts are not very different than an upscale suburb. I think you all will be happy with a bigger house and shorter commute.
Have you considered Bay Park (West Clairemont)?
Under appreciated area… bay views… centrally located.
If looking in BayHo or Bay Park (Western Clairemont) foundation/slab issues are a big deal. Parts of the area have lots of earth movement. When I lived above Costco on Morena a decade ago, every home on the street had a cracked slab. Nice homes too.

I went from Clairemont to Carmel Valley a few years ago.
Bay Park / Bay Ho is a good suggestion, as is UTC if you want a little nicer neighborhood.
Definitely avoid houses with 1-car garages in Clairemont.
And, consider looking only only at lots that back to a canyon. They are always much nicer, live better, feel more private. Back when I was there I figure the canyon lot premium was $40K-$50K.
Driving sucks. Make the move.
