Mortgage Broker: Middle man? Higher costs?

Shouldn’t I avoid this? Why or why not. Pros vs. Cons.

I’ve heard all sort of perspectives on this. Some of you are brokers.

Went to a small local bank today to begin(again) the process, thinking this small bank would lend directly, but was told that they use a broker who would have knowledge about all the various loans. Which can be good, but I thought maybe I could get a better deal from the small bank.

My first thought was that if I had 10 million to work with, there would be no mention of a “broker”. Am I wrong?

Mr. Smiley scared me when he popped up. That’s the most color I’ve seen on this website. Kinda scary really.
