No clue as to what to do about Africa. But I have three observations. First, where standard of living is concerned, much of Africa is worse off today than it was under colonial rule; that’s an objective read on the situation. So I’m sympathetic to jg’s point where that’s concerned. Second – and this is no revelation – much of the aid sent to post-colonial Africa has been absconded by the ruling elites. Africans appear to really enjoy screwing each other over. Third, if there is a God, He doesn’t appear to like the Africans too much and I can’t for the life of me figure out what they’ve done to deserve such a fate. No God that I would ever worship would perpetrate such a clusterf*ck on such a large group of innocents.
June 20, 2007 at 2:09 PM #60794CardiffBaseballParticipantI for one, —as a right-winger— think there are too many religious right types that drive people away from Christ. Now it’s one thing for JG to stick up for Christianity, when it gets bashed here non-stop.
The problem is liberals define compassion by taking from one and giving to another. I am hardly a social conservative, though I am not a big fan of abortion, I tend to listen to heavy-metal, drink, etc. However what drives me away from the left are things like affirmative action, wanting higher taxes, amnesty for illegals, and telling everyone what kind of car they ought to drive. Talk about religious freaks… What about the A-holes that want to ban the SUV?
They don’t want the govt. in my bedroom but by god, my garage and my toilet is fair game.
And no I am not a bush-bot at all.

June 20, 2007 at 2:22 PM #60796NotCrankyParticipantRustico no longer calls jg lots of bad names. Jg has demonstrated sympathy for disposable chinese girl babies and poor souls, who for the mere reason that they are criminals, are subjected to mandatory organ harvesting.I do realize my perception of sympathy from him on these points could be mistaken. However, jg has demonstrated empathy in other ways as well.He loves history and the contrarian points of view are canvas for his expression of his knowlege of events and circumstances past and present. Anyone getting emotional over his content is a sucker because it’s all fun for him(notice who starts much of the controversy). That said Rustico observes at least half of jg’s ideas to be misconceived, over patriotic, imperialist, misanthropic and even primative. Rustico has learned not to engage in debate with such a fellow especially since he has proven to be so unreceptive to the opinions of others. His being Christian could be purely coincidental to this impervious attitude. LOL. That said I think he is as “good” as anyone else, approximately.Think of a high achieving Archie Bunker.

Best wishes to allJune 20, 2007 at 3:37 PM #60816AnonymousGuestOr a perceptive Homer Simpson, R-.
Heck, this is good clean fun, and nothing more. It is enlightening, occasionally. Actually, it’s eye-opening for me (wow, some of you libs have harsh anti-American views; I had no idea).
On this political stuff, I know of no one who changes their mind after discussion. Impetus for changes must be heartfelt, and such only comes from within, I think.
CB, you can drink and listen to heavy metal and be a conservative or a Christian. I do both and am both.

I almost wrote practically the same thing. A man or woman past 30 rarely changes perspective. If a man does he won’t admit it.

Same as it ever was – same logic that get’s regurgitated by neo-cons everywhere. Demonize the enemy is the way to win any debates.

June 20, 2007 at 5:16 PM #60842AnonymousGuestWow, Nancy, you have a thin skin. ‘You libs have harsh anti-American views’ is ‘demonizing?’
Seems to me that saying that ‘Libs are traitors’ would be demonizing (and, I’m not saying that).
Yes, this place is a real eye-opener for me.

June 20, 2007 at 5:17 PM #60844lostkittyParticipantIsnt that the truth Nancy!
I’ve been told i post ‘hate’ comments towards Christians, and also that I am ‘anti-American’. Neither could be further from the truth. So i continue to stand up when jg starts in with his religion and politics … which is approximately every 3rd or 4th topic. Then, when things get slow each month or he cant find his angle – he starts a thread on one of the two (religion or politics) in off-topic. Yet I am the one who gets accused of bringing it up…
