It is not true that Miramar does not fly at night. At least once a month they do touch and goes to certify their pilots in night landings/takeoffs. It’s over before 10pm though… probably before 9pm.
They also fly on weekends. Especially the weekend of the airshow – where it seems all noise restrictions are out the window. This was an issue when my kids used to nap. Not so much anymore. But on airshow weekends (once a year) it’s not uncommon to have it so loud that car alarms go off.
I live in UC – so we’re under the flight path. It’s true you get used to it. I don’t have to interrupt conversations very often… that happens more in Sorrento Mesa during the day.
Here’s some info from the Marines about the noise patterns.
http://www.miramar.usmc.mil/aicuz/LowRes/IndivPFDs/Chap_3_Noise_Screen.pdfYou might also be interested in the accident potential zone… Especially folks in Carmel Valley and west Mira Mesa… the flight path out of Miramar is NOT due west… It heads north and then out over torrey pines golf course. The idea was to avoid dense residential.

Week before the Mira Mar airshow is outrageous. I have planes loading g 100′ over the house. I went home for lunch one day while they were practicing and thought the house was coming apart. Very cool otherwise…
No kidding. I have friends who live 2 doors down from where the plane hit recently. And another friend who, as a child in UC, had a piece of jet go through their family room… (late 70’s or early 80’s) then was living approx 1/4 mile from the jet crash this time.

April 12, 2011 at 9:20 PM #687109CricketOnTheHearthParticipantI am currently in south MM, a few blocks north of Thanksgiving Lane, and we do not really get flight noise from the base here. I think it’s because we are off to the side of the runway, not in line with it. Sometimes I can hear a roaring from direction of the base in the evenings which I assume is some kind of engine checking on the part of the maintenance crews. Or, it could be from Vulcan Materials (gravel pit directly between MM and the base).
Occasionally (1/couple of months) a “ghetto mosquito” buzzes around over my neck of the woods for a half hour or so, loudspeakering about a lost child or loose suspect or such.
