Is it worth upgrading to Granite counter tops?
I have friends in Carlsbad who are planning on selling their $650K house soon. They have got multiple bids to upgrade their kitchen counters and backsplash to granite. The bids all came in around $12K. The current counter tops and back splashes are white tile and look quite respectable. Is it worth doing the upgrade or should they keep their list price $12K lower?
I’m a buyer in the Carlsbad market looking for homes in about the price range of your friends. I would not pay $12,000 more for a home with granite than one that just had white ceramic tile. I’ve looked at a lot of homes here, and many with granite. Quite a few have had ugly granite counters, and in my mind I’ve taken that into consideration (ie. replacing ugly countertops). It’s really all about personal taste.
they should save their money and get the house on the market now.
Cali4, If there are nto any obvious non-starters, why don’t consider meeting george’s friends, if they are open to it? If you like the house, get a break from them, compared to comps, in exchange for their not having to sweat any sales preparations/repairs in escrow and leave out realtors, knocking off another 5%-6%. Stranger things have happened than a possible win-win in a scenario like this.

The big box stores have significant track records for bad workmanship. The big box stores don’t actually do the installation, they shop it out to local contractors and then tack 10% (or more) onto what the contractor is going to charge. Cheapest contractor wins the work.
My personal experience with having Home Depot install a Whole House Fan was a nightmare because of their sub-contractor. Waited three months for installation. Dozens of phone calls and trips to the store to complain. Finally canceled the installation and found a contractor myself who had the thing up within days.

I was down at this shop today buying some second hand equipment. The product certainly is nice for high end custom designs. Seem like really good people too.
