Brian – since you have ties to Philly, you should look into the organization Philabundance.
They do a phenomenal job of helping those who are short on food -with emphasis on fresh produce etc. We used to bring our extra garden produce (you know – the hundreds of extra zuchinni’s every ends up with because they plant too many plants.) to the Germantown Unitarian church (on Lincoln Drive) to go to Philabundance. A friend’s brother drives a truck for them – picking up extra food ingredients from various restaurants.
It’s a good organization – and their emphasis on whole foods whenever possible should appeal to your values.

March 8, 2011 at 11:25 AM #674828scaredyclassicParticipantNot trying to be lighthearted.
But everyone has a budget.
Spending less has to make someone less insecure.
No meat.
Anecdotally I know some broke people who spend more on food than I do.
If you’re flat broke yeah it sucks and you’re in trouble.
But just because it’s difficult to cope doesn’t mean you give up.
It’s always difficult to change and save and adapt and spend less.
Its not that horrible. Unless you’re destitute .

March 8, 2011 at 11:28 AM #674833briansd1GuestI’m talking conceptual here.
Of course there will be sob stories all the time.
However, the data shows that food is not expensive in relation to income. It’s the cheapest ever.
Of course, one could argue that food is always too expensive because some people don’t have enough of it.
The same argument goes for housing. When is housing cheap enough? Never as long as people are homeless.
