This is all subject to change and might be cyclical, but with regards to sports… I have two boys, my wife was a college athlete, and I was good enough to play small college basketball, so the kids will inherit some of that and hopefully a little height so when I searched communities I took sports into account.
Check the records of Encinitas area (La Costa Canyon), Torrey Pines, Poway and Rancho Bernardo Vs. the two high schools covered by the Penasquitos area. Most of RP now goes to Westview HS, but there is a good chunk of the community still going to Mt. Carmel. Note that I don’t follow wrestling, so take my words with a grain of salt if that’s important.
Part of the lack of success in RP might be attributed to the fact that the RP schools are one division lower, and have less kids to pick from. I think RB will have another HS coming on-board in a few years which could cut into their talent base.
In any case, it seems in the power sports that I follow (baseball, basketball, football) that the RP schools are a notch below the other 4.
Eric Chavez went to Mt. Carmel though, and I think James Lofton’s kid went to Westview, so if the kids are good then it doesn’t matter what the school is. In fact I sometimes wish I picked a less competitive community, but it is what it is.

PHS is far and away the best program in the county and one of the top in the state (for like the last 20 years). They will happily destroy any of the other PUSD schools!
The cool thing is, even kids who might not be the greatest get a lot out of the program. I was never much into wrestling, but my son wanted to give it a shot. And even though he never was first team, it was a great experience for him and helped him grow in a lot of ways.
November 1, 2006 at 8:12 AM #38895MANmomParticipantpowayseller, you have not really looked at PQ. Just as
Poway has some junky neighborhoods (garden rd. all up and down pomerado from poway rd to ted williams, Aubrey, I could go on) PQ does have some junky older neighborhoods, but you can’t judge the whole area by a few places. Check out Park village area, the area by the new middle school, Christmas card lane (Oviedo), Barcelona, Torrey Highlands, I could go on. I have lived on that side of the freeway, I sincerely like this area better, mostly because of the people. And again, you can’t beat living by the canyon. There are many beautiful areas of Poway, true. Another consideration, though, is the fact that it is usually about 10 degrees cooler here by the canyon, we get a great breeze up from the ocean. Poway can really get hot in the summer.MANmom
November 1, 2006 at 8:59 AM #38900PerryChaseParticipantI would agree that Penasquitos is preferable to Poway. Poway does have high-highs and low-lows. I’ve visited my friends there and it does get hot in the summer. True, you can get bigger lots in Poway. But what is the use of a large lot that you have to irrigate at great cost lest it’s all dried weeds?
I don’t understand living east for a large lot. You spend all your money on air-conditioning and water. That money is better spent on a better house closer to the coast, in my view.
November 1, 2006 at 11:01 AM #38921CarlsbadlivingParticipantDon’t listen to Powayseller about Penasquitos. We are renting on Twin Trails right now and love it. 90% of the houses are well kept, very few cars on the street. We are right in the middle of Christmas Card Lane. Come Xmas time, we have carrolers, horse-drawn carriages, block parties, even tour buses cruising through the neighborhood. Very friendly neighborhood. And no HOA or mello roos.
We have quick access to the 56 and therefore the 15 and 5. We miss out on most of the morning fog but still get a decent cool breeze in the summer.
I will definetly buy there, if and when the opportunity arises.
November 1, 2006 at 8:41 PM #38979powaysellerParticipantSounds like I missed some of the good communities in RP. I did check out some of the newer areas in 2000, like Park Village, but didn’t like the small lots, so we passed it up. RP has cooler weather than Poway; Poway weather pretty much sucks. We looked at RP first, but passed it up due to old neighborhoods, small lots, and road noise. Probably the really good houses were out of our price range, as I didn’t get to see them. I’m surprised that someone is taking my views of RP personally. Get real! This is a housing blog and we are supposed to give our ideas of housing. Personally I passed up RP because it was unappealing to me, and for those folks living out of the area, they won’t get this practical information off the MLS photos. If you like RP, by all means, go live there. The weather is really good, you are close to the coast, and have good freeway access.
In general, be aware of road noise on many properties, eveywhere in SD County. SD is quite hilly, and road noise travels for miles, going up hills. Noise travels just as a fire, uphill. That’s something you wouldn’t catch looking at MLS photos. When we looked at houses in 2000, we passed up at least half just because of the road noise. It’s too bad that the view lots are often accompanied by road noise.
November 1, 2006 at 11:03 PM #38988sdcellarParticipantPS– You trip me out. People take it personally when you rip the area they live in (you posted right after somebody said they lived there and really liked it). You’re the one who complains when people get personal, but you don’t understand that many of the things you say are very personal. You get that, don’t you? Even your “Get real!” comment shows how personally you take things. It’d be nice of you to afford others the same consideration.
November 2, 2006 at 7:50 AM #39003MANmomParticipantPS, MH, if you do choose PQ, don’t buy or rent in the Woodcrest hills subdivision, near Mercy Road. That area has the 92129 zipcode, but the schools are Mira Mesa, which are much less sought after than Poway unified schools.

November 2, 2006 at 9:45 AM #39017(former)FormerSanDieganParticipantRP is close to the coast ? HUH ?
Maybe it’s closer to the coast than Poway, but I wouldn’t call anything near the I-15 close to the coast. Now if you are off the 5 that’s close to the coast.
November 2, 2006 at 10:51 AM #39035sdcellarParticipantI think she meant compared to Poway, it’s close to the coast.
Well, if compared to Ramona, Poway is close to the coast, but compared to Julian, Ramona is close to the coast, but compared to Borrego Springs, Julian is close to the coast, but if compared to El Centro…
Okay, now I’m just being stupid (and all a joke! winkey smiley).
But, didn’t you mean to say there’s no life east of the I-5? At least that’s what I’ve always been told by my friends who live to the west. Hey! I should probably be offended by that!
