How about the city actually using their police properly, as crime-fighters rather than revenue agent thugs?
They are more than happy to give out tickets, yet when my friend’s house in PB was robbed, they didn’t even bother to come the same day and take a report.
Problem is that if you fire even 25% without a change in management, there will be just as many revenue collectors, but even fewer who’ll care about serious crimes. Hang the chief and top management out to dry, THEN begin the cuts of rank-and-file.
March 20, 2013 at 2:13 PM #760772dumbrenterParticipant
I just got pulled over this morning for “speeding” on the side street on my way to work. This is the third time in 2013 our extremely safe street has been targeted by SD Traffic Cops. There were TWO cops present. What a huge waste of taxpayer dollars!
I now officially support cutting San Diego’s Police budget in all forms, since obviously they have huge money to waste. I also am considering changing my position on the pension. My eyes have been opened that at least this PD, under this chief, are wasting Taxpayer dollars. Next time the city comes with their hand out in propositions, I’m voting No. Cut the police first.
Interesting…while you are at liberty to change your political preferences based on personal experiences, has it ever occurred to you that the simplest solution is not to speed?
They could post a whole posse of SDPD and it would mean nothing to you since you are not speeding.
I live by a school in carmel valley and navigating stop signs near the school is a pain with obnoxious drivers who would rather kill me & my kid than actually stop at the stop sign. Can you direct some of that SDPD to my ‘hood? I keep asking for more…and if they get more money out of these idiots, even better.March 20, 2013 at 2:18 PM #760773spdrunParticipantReally depends on whether speed limits make sense in a given area. I’m sure that there are places in SD Co where the limit suddenly drops to 25 mph around a curve, and Officer Porky is waiting 100 feet later.

I would LOVE it if they would GTFO off my work street and go police a school area. I literally cross the street in question hundreds of times a year to go between buildings and have never, ever felt unsafe. Sorry, 40 mph on a wide, straight street in good weather is safe, regardless of what the posted limit says.March 20, 2013 at 2:31 PM #760775meadandaleParticipant
How about the city actually using their police properly, as crime-fighters rather than revenue agent thugs?

I had my bike stolen out of my garage last september in Grantville. The police showed up quickly enough and took a report but they basically didn’t do ANYTHING on the case. Last month the bike showed up on Craigs List. I called the detective assigned to the case and he told me that they wouldn’t do anything.
They’re basically telling criminals that they can steal with impunity because they will do nothing to stop or solve property crimes.
March 20, 2013 at 2:53 PM #760778jstoeszParticipantIts not sd. But my car got stolen in an upscale suburb of vegas when we were out on a climbing trip to red rocks. Cops really didn’t give a crap. I got a call from a check cash place trying to verify a check, and they kept the person’s Drivers license for me. I phoned the info over to the police, and still they have done nothing. It has been 2 years now and they don’t give a crap no matter how easy it all is. They answer the phone and are polite and nice, but they don’t actually do anything.
March 20, 2013 at 2:59 PM #760779jstoeszParticipantI never really realized until this experience how worthless cops are.
BTW, I have tremendous respect for the job they must do. Most of us get to isolate our communication to smart people. We live in smart people neighborhoods, work with smart people, and are friends with smart people. I am always blow away when some complete moron sneaks into my bubble and I have to deal with them. Cops have to have intense contact with idiots on a daily basis.
But clearly their priorities are all jacked up from the top.
March 20, 2013 at 3:07 PM #760780allParticipantHunting down and persecuting thieves is a cost, handing out tickets brings in money. Unless you are the unlucky taxpayer who got robbed or received a ticket you are better of financially when cops focus on traffic citations.
March 20, 2013 at 4:22 PM #760782paulflorezParticipantYes, let’s cut the police budget so that you can go faster than the posted speed limit without getting a ticket.
March 20, 2013 at 4:36 PM #760783DWCAPParticipantI dont live in SD anymore, but I totally agree with the OP. In the space of about a year I had two run-ins with SDPD. In one, I got a speeding ticket when litterally going around a turn where the speed limit dropped from 35 to 25. I got hit up for 30mph, and the cop told me flat out “I know you were slowing, but you need to be at the posted speed limit when you pass the sign.” Open street, no one on it, car slowing in a controlled manor not slamming on breaks or going well below speed limit in the 35mph zone. TICKET HIM……
Year later my house house got broken into. Laptops, TV, $ all stolen. This was a smash and grab opperation where they broke our window. My roommate at the time found his laptop on Craigslist (ID’d by his navy stickers, USS Salt Lake City if I remember right, that they dont make anymore). He called the officer incharge, and she told him flat out to call the number, buy the laptop back, ID it positivly by a serial number or something and then she would do something about it. So we are suppose to run our own stings now too.
Thanks for nothing SDPD.

It sickens me to see that cops do NOTHING when average citizens are victimized, but they magically have tons of resources when they need to “monitor” law-abiding citizens who are peacefully protesting against injustice or bank bailouts, etc.
There is something very wrong with our “justice” system.
March 21, 2013 at 10:25 PM #760817NeetaTParticipantPlease give me the exact location you got the speeding ticket. I want to test out my new radar detector / jammer.

I think you have confused “you” (i.e. me) with “the cops”
Hunting down and persecuting theivs is a cost – to the cops, but it benefits me.
Paying traffic tickets brings in money – to the cops, but hurts me.
I think this is the OP’s point. They aren’t serving the people anymore. Just funding their own existence, which, if they aren’t reducing crime, isn’t really justified.

If it were only that simple and honest; the truth is….it isn’t.
Consider spending 40 bucks on this well rated radar/laser detector – it could save your life.
Remember, you don’t have to break the law to be a victim of the police/govt.
The less contact one has with police the better; in general they are very dangerous to even law abiding average citizens IMO.
