ParticipantOx – In the article you linked there was one that was affordable – Tony Curtis’ islands in Nova Scotia. Only 245k (canadian $). That’s way less than an Escondido avocado ranch. LOL.

You can have a little one-bedroom with a view starting at about 80k euros ($114k). A little more will get you something like this:

If location is important and you’ve got the money, there’s always Santorini (the volcanic island that blew up part of the Minoan civilization). You can’t top it for history/beauty:

A half-million for that is a bargain compared to the San Diego coast. Do a google image search for Santorini and you’ll see what I mean.
