I watched it the other day. It was not at all what I expected.I hadn’t heard anything about it except how great almost everybody thought it was.
If I’d known it was mostly rap/hip hop I wouldn’t have gotten my expectations up. The first “song” was a super irritating rap piece. I paused it to read some reviews, and they talked about how many genres of music were in the show. So I was hoping it would improve. But it was dominated by rap. I only enjoyed very brief parts of it, particularly the guy who played King George and also an occasional funny joke or gag. I couldn’t stand the guy who played Jefferson. Super hammy and not nearly as entertaining as he seemed to think he was.
I wouldn’t say I hated it, but I did dislike it for sure.
I think a lot of the love for it is due to its inclusive qualities. Which isn’t a great reason to love entertainment, if you ask me. It’s either entertaining or it’s not. And, to me, Hamilton was for the most part not entertaining.
July 22, 2020 at 2:02 PM #818899scaredyclassicParticipantI would say it sucked, which is just surprising to me, due to overwhelming love for it. Usually i feel like the crowd isnt 100 perc wrong, that if its universally hailed, its got to be at least ok.
I really expected to love it, and in fact went in with a completely positive excited viewpoint.
I wouldnt mind rap, but this rap s u c k s.
Repetitive sounding rap, done for suburban white people?
The storytelling….sucks.
Its just not moving. It seems like nonsense. Bad songs…not really funny. However
The king george bits are hilarious and awesome, though, i agree. Perfect little cameo. Just the right touch of effiminacy to be creepily terrifying. I expected more of that level of interestingness.
I was 100% bored.

I think its a little visually interesting.
The soundtrack alone would be much worse.
July 23, 2020 at 2:56 PM #818924svelteParticipantyeah. Theater is not our thing.
We try when we visit NYC. When in Rome and all.
The last time we sat in the back row. Had someone famous in it, can’t remember who. So boring. I got up to get a wine in the concession stand. Was followed there and back by an usher with a flashlight. Annoying. It got so bad we started whispering to each other to break the monotony. Gay couple in front of us glared at me.
We’ve got friends in the Napa area that love that stuff. They met while they were in a play (onstage) in SF. They can have it. They were talking about Hamilton all the time when it was the rage. To each their own. Life is all the theater I need.
July 23, 2020 at 8:50 PM #818930sdrealtorParticipantGrew up going to theatre. My big sister worked on Broadway as well as music industry. Love Hamilton. Saw it in San Diego and on Broadway. Sitting in Palm Desert watching it again with my daughter. Loved it everytime, love it now. Sorry lame old white dudes. Go back to listening to the same old music you’ve probably been listening to since high school.. You know it’s true.
July 23, 2020 at 9:10 PM #818931scaredyclassicParticipantNo. Not true. Hamilton is sucky rap. Not real artful rap.
I did not listen obsessively to jazz in hs like i do now…
July 23, 2020 at 9:42 PM #818932sdrealtorParticipantMore directed to others but then what real rap do you like? What music did you listen to by a new artist? Last 5 years? 10 years?
July 23, 2020 at 10:14 PM #818933scaredyclassicParticipantOk, i dont actually like rap, but ive tried many rap artists. I was told id like A TRIBE CALLED QUEST recently but, alas, did not.
I’ve asked rap fans for other artists and spotified dozens of the songs, but the only one that’s really spoken to me is YOU A STUPID HO by nikki minaj. That is definitely a work of art, and i truly mean that. I also reallllllly like the video.
I dont see how anyone could dislike STUPID HO.
But even a rap dilletante like myself can spot the diffrrence between interesting rhythms and the boring repetitive hamilton stuff that sounds like a studrnt project type rhyming.
As opposed to minajsreal art:

I am the female WeezyJuly 23, 2020 at 11:19 PM #818934scaredyclassicParticipantCompared to the virtuosity of minaj, hamilton sounds more like the soundtrack of oklahoma than contemporary black music.
I agree with the top youtube comment on STUPID HO:
“this will be the final credits at the end of the world”.

I’ve went Jazz the last two years, but in the last 10 here are some of the artists whose albums I’ve added to my music collection:
Missy Elliott
Pep & Rash
Eminem
Anna Lunoe
Coldplay
Nicki Minaj
YG (loved toot it and boot it!)
Robin Thicke
Groove Session
Q-Tip
2Pac (greatest hits)
Gwen Stefani
Jason Aldean
Imagine Dragons
Brantley Gilbert
Bruno Mars
Darius Rucker
Riff Raff
10cent
Lil Nas (love Old Town Road!)Thats probably only 10-15% of the artists whose albums I’ve bought in last 10 years, many more I can’t think of right now..I’d say 50% of what I’ve bought is older stuff, 50% new music including those listed above.

[/quote]I don’t think I could sit and listen to that song – too repetitive for me to enjoy. The video is fun though!
We are a big Nicki fan in our house. My all time favorite of hers is “Beez in the Trap”. I swear I saw heaven when that played in my darkened music room, 4 foot speakers, huge subwoofer, a little something to sip on (no not Purple Drank), and enjoyable company. Turn it up and feel the low frequencies! Truly a work of art.
We also enjoy Starships and Anaconda.
And she puts out some awesome vids – Va Va Voom, Pound the Alarm, others…
Oh and forgot to mention before we’ve also bought a Khia album. I looove My Neck, My Back. When we have guests over it always gets a belly laugh out of someone…they’re not expecting to hear that playing on the speakers in our house!
That’s another song with great bass…
July 24, 2020 at 7:24 AM #818937scaredyclassicParticipantI reminds mbe of a bad movie adaptation of a musical from my childhood, 1776.
https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/1776-1972
Which humanized the mythical founders with bad song.
Funny that we stkll find it shocking, to think of founding fathers as regular dudes, whether dweebs as in 1776 or bad rappers, as in hamilton
July 24, 2020 at 7:27 AM #818938scaredyclassicParticipant“It just sounded like when they sent people to rap multiplication to me when I was an inner-city youth, ’cause they’re like, that’s the way we’re going to get through to them,” he said.
