They dont need to default, they can just drive the value of the US dollar into the ground. Nothing like paying off a debt that was worth something 10 years ago with dollars that are worthless today. This has been going on a very long time,but rather slowly.

From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor inflation.
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction deflation
Is also great
