. . . I consider myself frugal and borderline cheap, but I would fix my roof or carpet! My car is 2001 and paid off, but it’s in excellent shape and well maintained. Once I had a small dent in it, and I had it fixed right away. It should run fine for another 10-15 years. (I put in less than 7000 miles a year b/c my frugality dictates that I live as close to work as possible). . . .
Diego, I would fix those things too (at least the roof, before it got THAT bad). My car is a ’94 which I purchased from a private party for cash in ’99. I just bought yet another set of tires (+ alignment) for it and fixed a longstanding transaxle leak. It’s ready to roll for another long road trip!!
I put 9K to 11K miles on my car per year but ONLY because I take it on several long road trips throughout the year! At less than 190K miles, it’s still a baby/young child!!
I have a relative whose income is about $170K per year who rotates his driving between his three greatly-loved “early ’80’s” sedans.
I’m with you, life’s too short to commute and I am too cheap with my gas and time to pay for the privilege!

November 17, 2010 at 12:41 PM #631615AnonymousGuestMaybe he doesn’t fix the house because he doesn’t want to deal with contractors.
It takes a lot of effort to find and manage a contractor that will do quality work for a good price.
Or you just accept that fact that you’re likely gonna get ripped off, hire anybody, accept the work they do, and pay whatever they ask.
Even if you can afford to get ripped off, it still can be infuriating when it happens.
It’s easy to procrastinate this stuff.
Gotta go adjust the tarps…

November 17, 2010 at 12:52 PM #631620bearishgurlParticipant. . . He drives a 1992 Town Car and brings lunch from home. The office carpet is patched with duct tape. One worker calls him ‘the cheapest man alive.’ . . .
Regarding Lincoln Towncars, ’92 was one of their best years, if not THE best year for these cars! The color-coordinated interiors were gorgeous, its all-LED dash `state-of-the-art’ as well as the interior burl throughout, including the numerous back seat accessories decorated in it as well!! And what a comfortable road car this is!!! What more could he ask for?? Mr. Wedbush might have a little trouble fitting it into a typical LA meter space but I’m sure all his buildings have an ample underground space (or two) with his name on it :=]
Yeah, Diego, I would definitely fix the office carpet. If an employee trips over it and injures themselves, they will have to file a worker’s comp claim. And Mr. Wedbush would NOT be pleased with his *new* rates after the processing of that claim! :=(
