I think the article said his wife packs his lunch for him.
Of course I am aware of what you are saying about property values. That’s what gated communities are for. The slob obviously wasn’t put on this planet to keep other people’s property values up, who was? I don’t think that makes him an “asshole” either. It makes him have different values which he expresses within his rights.People think that other people were put here to keep their property values up suck.
Furthermore, going on about how he hasn’t had a vaction in 3 years is idiotic. He is sticking with what he knows and that is, get hard nosed in bad times. That’s his business. He paid for the meat at holiday parties, sounds fair to me.What should he buy booze? If his neighbors let their roofs go and gave 500K to charities the world might be a better place…that he has 150M sitting around besides, is his business.
I think people who watch the same stupid football teams crash into each other every week are mental. Who cares? It’s their business. We are all just different kinds of oddballs. They have gated communities and espn for some and others are eccentric hardworking slobs.

I consider myself frugal and borderline cheap, but I would fix my roof or carpet! My car is 2001 and paid off, but it’s in excellent shape and well maintained. Once I had a small dent in it, and I had it fixed right away. It should run fine for another 10-15 years. (I put in less than 7000 miles a year b/c my frugality dictates that I live as close to work as possible).
I agree with Permabear… getting rich for us is a lot easier than we would think. But not if you feel like buying stuff (aka JUNK) just to keep up with the Joneses or b/c you think you “need” to have them.

November 17, 2010 at 12:05 PM #631595bearishgurlParticipantNot to be sticking up for the old f@rt, but IMO, he still works because he has to have his fingers in the pot in everything cuz he’s a “control freak.” His firm could probably run fine w/o him.
Lot’s of guys who were very successful throughout their lives HAVE to come into the office every day between the ages of 75-85 for at LEAST 4-6 hours, drink coffee, eat their brown-bag lunches and WORK (or advise younger colleagues), etc. H@ll, they don’t even mind moving boxes into the basement storage on dollies or answering the phone when the receptionist is on break!! These firms just “make work” for them out of respect for their contributions to the firm to continue to avail themselves of their intellectual property, which will certainly die with them.
Many of these guys haven’t taken a lot of vacations throughout their lives (even if they could afford them) and DON’T KNOW ANY OTHER KIND OF LIFE EXCEPT THE OFFICE. And their wives (if they still have one) don’t want them hanging around the house all day while they take yoga and art classes.
A know a very smart guy who will be 87 soon who acts as a construction consultant and go-to person who STILL works four days a week, 7 hours per day. When I’ve been in the office and someone calls who he hasn’t spoke to in awhile, he answers, “Yeah, no one’s tried to put a toe tag on me yet so I’m still here,” lol.
The reason this eccentric LA investment-banker dude’s “greatest generation” has so much money is because they never spent anywhere near as much as a they earned. Many made enormous contributions to this state/country, even the world, but their own personal needs were humble. We can all learn from them in this regard :=}
